This kind of ?quit-while-you?re-ahead? sucks PhilBoxing.com Sun, 14 Oct 2012 By kidsPorts Boxer Ryan Soliveres did it. The fight was in the undercard of the Rogelio Doliguez-Ciso Morales WBO Oriental featherweight championship last night at the Batangas City Coliseum which Doliguez won via 3rd round knock out. Soliveres dominated the well built and menacing looking Gabriel Royo for three (3) rounds with his superior boxing skills. With his southpaw stance Soliveres showed Royo he needs to change the way he boxes. Royo lunges with his slow moving punches which Soliveres could well see coming too easily, side step from, parry or thwart by clinching. Soliveres then counters with accurate punches to make Royo look bewildered where he was. The crowd roared and applauded with gusto at the entertaining display of how to make an opponent repeatedly miss even when Soliveres had his back against the ropes or ?trapped? in a corner. Soliveres made Royo looked like it was premature for him to be a 10-rounder boxer. With punches repeatedly finding Royo?s jaw, it was expected the fight will not last the distance. Indeed, it did not. But not the way expected. It was Soliveres who quit in his stool during the 1-minute rest period after the end of the 3rd round. Soliveres was too tired to go on. His lips were clearly pale from exhaustion. When informed by the referee that the fight had been stopped, Royo looked more surprised than glad he just won a losing fight. It is clear Soliveres did not prepare stamina wise for the fight. By not being so prepared, Soliveres mocked boxing. He cheated not only himself but the boxing fans as well. His masterful display of the pleasant side of the so called sweet science was negated by his quitting-while-well-ahead stunt. Soliveres just showed there is such an undesirable side of ?quit-while-you?re ahead?.  |
