Guy Jutras, a gentleman and pilgrim of world boxing, passes away

PhilBoxing.com

Every now and then in boxing, we come across a true "jack-of-all-trades"; a person so complete that he's hard to define. Someone who stands out, far above the rest of us.

Guy Jutras, the pride of Quebec and Canada, has passed away at the age of ninety-five. During his long life, Guy was a boxer, referee, judge, matchmaker, and radio and television commentator. He did it all, and he did it all well!

Skilled with his fists in the heat of battle, Guy decided his destiny lay in the gym, not on the streets. As a welterweight, he excelled after joining the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1950, Guy won the Maritime Provinces Golden Gloves and, a year later, the Navy Golden Gloves.

He turned professional and fought his first five bouts in just five weeks, winning three of them by knockout.

Wisely and shrewdly, Guy used his earnings to finance his education. He studied at Springfield College in Massachusetts to become a physical education teacher, earning his Bachelor of Science degree.

Later, he decided to venture into the insurance industry, guided by his mother, who was the first female insurance broker in Quebec.

Guy became an amateur boxing referee in 1969. With experience, he moved into professional boxing, where he distinguished himself by intervening only when necessary with the fighters, always maintaining control of the flow, rhythm, and cleanliness of each bout, from the opening bell to the final bell.

Subsequently, he became a judge, officiating more than seventy fights around the world.

As an expert radio and television commentator, drawing on his extensive knowledge of all aspects of the ring, Guy proved to be a natural and charismatic communicator. He also served as an assistant matchmaker for Interbox Promotions.

Guy was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1979 and into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2019. Today, international flags fly there at half-staff.

He began refereeing in 1969 and judging in 1980. He was present at fights featuring: Ricky Hatton, Acelino Freitas, Mikkel Kessler, Markus Beyer, John Ruiz, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Márquez, Félix Trinidad, Joel Casamayor, Virgil Hill, Paulie Ayala, Antonio Cermeño, Pernell Whitaker, Jorge Castro, Junior Jones, Michael Nunn, Meldrick Taylor, Mike McCallum, Claude Noel, Vinny Pazienza, Mark Breland, Juan Coggi, Marlon Starlon, Julian Jackson, Barry McGuigan, Wilfredo Gómez, Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, Donald Curry, Marvin Hagler, Patrizio Oliva, Matthew Hilton, Wilfred Benítez, Gene Hatcher, Frank Bruno, Gerrie Coetzee, Dave Hilton, Eric Lucas, Otis Grant, Christophe Tiozzo, Trevor Berbick, Crisanto España, Donny LaLonde, Eusebio Pedroza, Juan LaPorte, Michael Spinks, Edwin Valero, Miguel Cotto, Alexander Muñoz, Nobuo Nashiro, Martin Castillo, Ruslan Chagaev, Nikolai Valuev, James Toney, Manny Siaca, Noel Arambulet, Juan Landeta, Bebiis Mendoza, Chana Porpaoin, Yo Sam Choi, Keitaro Hoshino, Eric Morel, John Michael Johnson, Celes Kobayashi, Julio Diaz, William Joppy, Fabrice Tiozzo, Roberto García, Freddy Norwood, Hideki Todaka, James Page, Enrique Sanchez, Rafael Del Valle, Jesus Rojas, Orzubek Nazarov, Nate Miller, Leavander Johnson, Daorung Chuwatana, Wilfredo Vazquez, Gilbert Dele, Brian Mitchell, Rafael Pineda, Myng Woo Yuh, Leo Gamez, Fidel Bassa, Marlon Starling, Tomás Molinares, Steve Cruz, Rocky Lockridge, Antonio Esparragoza, Michael Dokes, Roger Mayweather, Ossie Ocasio, Aaron Pryor, Fulgencio Obelmejias, and Hilmer Kenty, among many others.

We have no idea how long our existence will last. Whether brief or long, we are born, we live, and then we die. It is what we do between the beginning and the end that defines us. It is the memories we leave behind that keep us alive.

Guy Jutras was one of the greatest.

Rest in peace; we will remember you for all the stories, walks, and meals we shared.
