PH chess wizard Jacobb Seda ties for 1st, settles for silver on tiebreaks in Thailand meet

PhilBoxing.com

PH chess wizard Jericho Jacobb “Eko” Seda displayed remarkable resilience after a challenging start, mounting a strong comeback to finish tied for first place at the Red Knights Chess Club’s “Chess Without Borders” Students Chess Championship (Under-11 division), held at the Australian International School Bangkok (AISB) in Bangkok, Thailand, last March 29, 2026.

The 9-year-old Seda, a Grade 3 student of La Salle Green Hills, had a tough opening round, losing to eventual champion Day Rattanaurachai.

Showing a never-say-die attitude, Seda bounced back with impressive victories over Evie Choi, Sara Ishii, Lele Song, Yuki Kishida, and Mako Tonegawa to secure a dramatic podium finish.

Rattanaurachai clinched the title via tiebreaks, as both he and Seda tallied five wins and one loss across six rounds.

Rattanaurachai’s lone defeat came at the hands of Tonegawa in the fourth round.

The Chess Arrow and LSGH Varsity Program extend their gratitude to LSGH FSC President Brother Edmundo L. Fernandez, Sports Program Development Office Head Ray Vincent Matthew Bienvenida, and Sports Coordinator Rex T. Resurrection for their continued support in the development and growth of the Chess Arrow and Varsity Program.

Special thanks are also extended to Eko’s parents, Jeric Seda and Magnolia Cabatic, for their unwavering support and dedication to his chess journey.

“Losses teach you a lot. They can be hard to bounce back from and can really take their toll mentally, especially in the first round. But if you reflect on why you lost, the mistakes you made, and how to fix them, you’ll be back in the winners’ column in no time. Don’t let losses go to your heart and wins go to your head,” said La Salle Green Hills Head Coach and Program Manager Jerich Cajeras.

It can be recalled that Seda previously won a bronze medal on Board 3 in the PAYA (Philippine Athletic Youth Association) Chess Team Tournament, helping LSGH secure a runner-up finish.

He also placed 3rd overall in the Mandaluyong Meet 2026 Elementary Boys division, as well as in the Bino Reyes Under-9 Rapid Chess Tournament.

Seda is set to compete in the 1st San Beda Alabang Inter-School Chess Tournament (Under-11 division) on April 25.(Marlon Bernardino)
