DENVER CUELLO ENDURES SHOULDER INJURY AND CUT TO WIN BY UD OVER IVAN MENESIS

PhilBoxing.com

World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Minimum weight Titlist, Denver ?The Excitement? Cuello emerged victorious in Mexico against Ivan Meneses of Puebla, Puebla Mexico.

The highly ranked 105 pound fighter and one of the country?s fastest rising star in boxing defeated the bigger and taller Meneses by the way of a 10 round UD victory Saturday night at the Auditorio del Bicentenario in Morelia, Michoacan de Ocampo, Mexico.

Cuello?s manager and promoter Aljo Jaro of the Jaro Boxing Stable informed Philboxing.com right after the fight that his ward dropped Meneses in the opening round of their 10 round bout but Meneses got up and survived the count.

Cuello hurt his right shoulder in the third round of the fight which hindered the Filipino?s movement in the ring. Cuello complained of pain in his right shoulder and arm to Jaro and his corner after the said round. Jaro advised his ward to use his boxing skills against his opponent in the upcoming rounds of the bout instead of going for the knockout. His opponent seemed to know of Cuello?s injury and pounded on his shoulder during exchanges in the corner according to Jaro.

(Meneses suspected that Cuello?s right shoulder was hurt and he hit it when Cuello was trapped in a corner. I advised Cuello to get away from Meneses and teach him a boxing lesson. He was able to manage the fight until the 10th round.) described Jaro.

The 25 year old fighter from Cabatuan, Iloilo out boxed his opponent in the succeeding rounds which was enough for him to win the fight in all of the three judges sitting at ringside. The scores were 98-90, 96-92 and 96-92

Cuello also suffered a cut on his right eye in the 5th round of his fight against Meneses after a clashed of heads between the two. ?Pag dating ng 5 rounds, nagkauntugan, na head-butt. Ang laki ng putok namin. Buti napatigil ko ang dugo. (After 5 rounds, they clashed heads, there was a head butt. He suffered a big cut. Fortunately, we were able to control the bleeding from it.) Jaro told this writer.

Cuello was also deducted a point after a series of head clashes by the referee of the fight, much to the dismay of Cuello and his corner. ?Kami na ang naputukan, kami pa ang na-deductionan! (We were the one who suffered the cut, yet we we were the one who got deducted with points.) expressed Jaro.

Cuello?s cut and his injured shoulder made it difficult for him to score his desired knockout against Meneses in Mexico but was able to manage the fight in his favor despite the injuries and in coming up with a decisive win in enemy territory.

Cuello and Jaro will stay in Mexico for another day to rest and heal and then leave for Los Angeles on Monday. They will stay in Los Angeles for a couple of days and then fly back to the Philippines on October 3rd.
