Mayol loses in Mexico by KO in the 9th
By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 23 Sep 2012
Rodel Mayol 31-5-2 (22 KO) lost in his bid to capture the IBF Super Flyweight belt from Mexican titleholder Juan Carlos Sanchez Jr. 14-1-1 (7 KO) at the Gimnasio Polifuncional, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Mayol who engaged his younger opponent in a toe to toe war was caught by a big right and left straight punch by Sanchez Jr in the 9th round of their exciting fight. The punch send the Filipino boxer through the ropes, outside of the ring and into the scorer?s table. Mayol tried to climb into the ring but referee Allan Huggins reached to the count of ten and halted the fight after that.
Mayol started the fight aggressively as he landed good combinations on the Mexican champion. He scored a knockdown in the 5th round which was protested by his opponent. Sanchez then came to life in the 7th round where he landed stiff combinations of his own. An accidental clash of heads in the same round produced a cut on the corner of Mayol?s right eye. The cut did not bother the native of Mandaue City as he matched his opponent?s punches in the round despite the oozing of blood from the wound.
Sanchez roared in the 8th round as he tagged Mayol with some heavy artillery in the 8th round. Mayol was hurt by Sanchez?s shots to his head and the body, forcing Mayol to hold his opponent at times during the attack. Mayol bent low to avoid getting hit as Sanchez unloaded on him on that round. But the brave Mayol fought back, countering Sanchez in the process. A visibly tired Mayol held on despite receiving hard shots from Sanchez and avoided kissing the canvass.
Mayol who was looking at another world title in this fight suffered the sixth defeat of his career with the loss, and his third knockout in the hands of his opponent. He climbed back into the ring and tried to put up a fighting stance after suffering the fall but referee Huggins has called the fight off already after reaching the count of 10.The time of the stoppage was 2:25 of the 9th round.
Sanchez successfully defended his IBF Super Flyweight belt in his third defense and improved his win to 15 victories and 8 knockouts.
