MARTINEZ PROVES HE IS THE REAL BELT OWNER BY DEFEATING CHAVEZ JR. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 17 Sep 2012 ![]() By kidsPorts There are already a lot of boxing reports describing the unanimous decision win of Sergio Martinez over Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. in Las Vegas so this article will not be about the actual fight. This is about the title contested by the fighters. The fight was for the WBC 160-lb regular title which was held by Martinez until he was ?promoted?, actually eased out as champion, to champion emeritus or whatever it means. Between the two, Martinez was really the champion as having won the title in the ring. Stripping a hard earned title from a fighter is some boxing anomaly which has become a habit of the WBC. Just look at the then WBC regular 122-lb champion Toshiaki Nishioka. It is good and proper that in its report, ESPN emphasized that Martinez was the defending lineal champion who retained his title by defeating Chavez Jr. But ESPN added that the win made Martinez regain the title from Chavez. By using the word ?regained?, ESPN made clear the title anomaly. If Martinez was ?promoted? in order for Chavez to fight for and win the regular title, the fight should have been for Martinez?s promoted title. But clearly it was not. It was the WBC ?regular? title which was at stake. Now Martinez wears the title because he won the fight. Had Chavez Jr. won, which he nearly did with the 12th round drama, Chavez would have ?retained? his gifted title and not win the other super WBC 160-lb title labelled on Martinez. RingTV.com writer Ryan Songalia has solid basis in his facebook wall entry, ?Martinez should throw the WBC belt in the trash where it belongs.? But a belt at this time, while slowly getting disrespect by many boxing fans, still commands honor and huge purses for the belt holder. Martinez might just keep it. To him and the knowledgeable boxing fan, Martinez did not ?regain? or retain the WBC middleweight championship of the world. He merely defended it against Mexican pretender Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. ![]() |
