2012 OLYMPICS: GREAT BRITAIN TOPS BOXING, USA MALE BOXERS GOT ZERO MEDAL

PhilBoxing.com

The first Olympic gold medal in women's boxing was awarded to Nicola Adams of host Great Britain, who won the flyweight final on August 9, 2012. Great Britain topped the medal standings with 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. They sent 7 male and 3 female boxers to the Olympics.

Ukraine was second with 2-1-2 and Cuba was third with 2-0-2. Rounding up the top ten were Russia 1-2-3, Ireland 1-1-2, Kazakhstan 1-1-2, China 1-1-1, Japan 1-0-1, United States 1-0-1, and Italy 0-2-1.

The other countries who won boxing medals were Brazil 0-1-2, Mongolia 0-1-1, South Korea 0-1-0, Thailand 0-1-0, Azerbaijan 0-0-2, Bulgaria 0-0-1, India 0-0-1, Lithuania 0-0-1, Tajikistan 0-0-1, and Uzbekistan 0-0-1.

The highest ranking Asian nation was Kazakhstan. China, Japan, Mongolia, South Korea, Thailand, India, and Uzbekistan were the other Asian countries to win medals. The Philippine drought will continue for another 20 years since Onyok Velasco?s silver in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The United States men?s boxing team failed to win a single medal, for the first time in Olympic boxing history. If not for the women, Claressa Shields who won the middleweight gold and Marlen Esparza who won the flyweight bronze, USA boxing would have been zero.

It was disgusting for the US who won 48 gold medals and 108 total medals topping the all-time medal standings since the 1904 Olympics. The last American gold medalist was Andre Ward during the 2004 Athens Olympics. The United States sent the most number of boxers to London. Team USA fielded nine male and three female boxers for a total of twelve fighters.

There were several protests and controversies hounding the 2012 Olympic boxing competition. That includes ABAP?s protest on Mark Anthony Barriga?s loss to Birzhan Zhakypov which the AIBA turned down.

AIBA however overturned the decision of the controversial match between Indian boxer Vikas Krishnan and American Errol Spence which was initially awarded 13?11 in favor of Krishnan. The decision was reversed for the reason that the nine holding fouls committed by the Indian boxer in the third round and the intentional spitting out of the gumshield were not penalized. The jury's decision was final and no further appeal by the Indians was accepted.
The 2012 Olympic gold medalists were:

Light flyweight - Zou Shiming (China)
Flyweight - Robeisy Ramirez (Cuba)
Bantamweight - Luke Campbell (Great Britain)
Lightweight - Vasyl Lomachenko (Ukraine)
Light welterweight - Roniel Iglesias (Cuba)
