Women?s National Golden Gloves - Politics of Amateur Boxing PhilBoxing.com Mon, 14 Jul 2008 Last night in a much anticipated final Keisher (Fire) McLeod-Wells boxed the perfect fight against the number 1 girl in the country Sacred Downing from Trenton, NJ yet didn?t get the verdict at the National Golden Gloves tournament in Hollywood Florida (Saturday 12th July). Sacred came to Hollywood as the reigning US number 1 and arrived with an army of supporters all bearing her name across their T-Shirts. Their non stop cheering support couldn?t have swayed the judges though, could it? The vocal tactics of Sacred?s corner was blindly evident as they would consistently applaud their charge for everything she did even when it was eating leather from Keisher?s punches (which was constant). Fire and Sacred have fought once before, which was earlier in 2008 when Sacred won by a close decision. These two 114 pd women?s fighters have both accumulated an array of championships and titles but have only fought each other once before last night. Fire outclassed her semi final opponent and almost stopped her at the end of the 3rd and 4th rounds to advance to last night?s final. Sacred had a more difficult job of it in her semi with a close but unanimous decision which saw her advance. Last nights final was an awaited meeting that was set to be a great fight and it didn?t disappoint either. Fire boxed a perfect game plan against her counter punching opponent, keeping her at the end of her jab and making the reluctant Sacred come forward and when she did, Fire would pick her off. Sacred seemed unable to deal with the height and reach advantage of her opponent. The first round was close, but as the bout continued it was obvious to all except the judges that Fire had Sacred?s number last night and at the decision, apart from the Sacred Chorus group, the verdict was met with jeers of fix and robbery. Bad decisions are never accepted but when a decision is passed because the group rendering the decision has an invested interest in the winner it leaves a sour taste in the mouth of boxing. USA Boxing has invested into the career of Sacred Downing and couldn?t allow their number 1 to get beaten. It was obvious to all in attendance last night at the Marriott ball room who the winner was. The disappointment is in the fact that Fire boxed a great fight and didn?t get rewarded for it. That is an injustice that certainly isn?t an isolated incident but never the less it still deprives a talented amateur boxer her just deserves. (PR) |
