World Youth Championships Quarterfinals: Bautista, Bornea enter quarters, Marcial bows out PhilBoxing.com Wed, 05 Dec 2012 Yerevan, Armenia - In a bizarre twist, World Junior Champion Eumir Felix Marcial crashed out of the World Youth Championship at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex here Monday leaving flyweight Ian Clark Bautista and light flyweight Jade Bornea to carry the PLDT-ABAP torch. Bautista, 18, and Bornea, 17, came up with scorching wins to barge into the quarterfinal round Tuesday. Of the 68 participating countries here, only 35 are still in the hunt. The semi-final round is on Thursday. The boxers take Wednesday off. Marcial was stymied by the steely defense of Slovakia's Michal Zatorsky who had his hands up over his face the whole time, now and then flicking short hooks that caught the attention of the judges. The Zamboanga native tried to break down the Slovak's defense by going to the body but Zatorsky still didn't oblige. The final score was 11-7 for the highly-experienced lad who has been fighting internationally since 2009. Bornea on the other hand displayed sheer magnificence in his win over another more experienced boxer, Tinko Banabakov of Bulgaria. Unaware of the sterling credentials of his foe who is both Bulgarian Youth and Under 22 champ aside from winning in Turkey and Serbia, Bornea used speed and in and out moves to baffle the opposition. The prized find from South Cotabato dominated the entire fight with scores of 6-3, 11-7 and finally 19-10. Informed of Banabakov's achievements after the fight, the 17 year old whose twin brother Jake is also in the national pool, exclaimed: "Magaling pala yon, sir? Buti na lang hindi nyo sinabi sa akin, baka inisip ko pa yon!" This is Bornea's first ever international trip. Bautista was likewise all business as he methodically disposed of shifty World Junior Championships Bronze Medalist Ham Sangmyeong of Korea. The two were toe to toe the entire fight but the Binalbagan, Negros Occidental boy had the better of the fierce exchanges, delivering 4-5 punch combos of hooks, uppercuts and straights that impressed the judges and the crowd. Round 1 was 7-4, round 2, 14-8, ending with a final score of 20-12. The quarterfinal round Tuesday will pit Bornea against lanky Jack Bateson of England, who is British, English and Commonwealth Champion and recently won silver in Finland's prestigious Tammer Cup. Bautista goes up against scrappy Irish National Youth Champion Kurt Walker. Abap executive director and delegation head Ed Picson said they have been scouting the opposition and they are quite formidable and more exposed to international competitions. "But what we lack in experience is made up by our boys' enthusiasm, dedication and natural skills. Abap chairman Manny Pangilinan and president Ricky Vargas have been giving valuable inspiration that boosts our young boxers' confidence. Rest assured we'll be in the thick of it." ![]() |
