Bornea wins, Bacho loses in World Youth Championships PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 Dec 2012 ![]() Yerevan, Armenia - Two neophytes of the PLDT-ABAP national team had their baptism of fire in the ongoing AIBA World Youth Championships at the Karen Demirchyan Sports Complex here Saturday. Jade Bornea, out of General Santos City, came away with flying colors while Mandaluyong's Jonas Bacho was not as fortunate, losing by a hair. Besides the sub-zero weather, both boxers were handicapped by drawing veterans in their very first international match. Bornea however, oozed with confidence and delivered sharp combinations to take all three rounds in routing Latvia's Dimitris Zaharovs, who has fought in several foreign competitions in Russia and Kazakhstan, including a previous World Championships. So dominant was the sprightly 18 year old Bornea (his twin brother Jake is also in the national pool) that he scored almost at will, attacking his taller opponent with crisp combos and then quickly flitting away from the counter-punch. The coaching staff however reprimanded him for a bit of showboating in the last round. Final score was 19-6 for the young Filipino. Bacho on the other hand had a herculean task from the get-go. Tall for a bantamweight (56 kg.) at 5'9", he was also reed-thin coming to the tournament, a full 2 kilos underweight days before the fight. In contrast to the other boxers, he was being urged to eat more (he only joined Abap less than 6 months ago). He weighed 55.5 kilos the day of the fight. But what concerned the staff more was the fact that he was going up against a grizzled veteran, Nursultan Bizanbayev, who won the gold medal in the Sydney Jackson Memorial Tournament in Uzbekistan earlier this year, among other international stints dating back to 2009. The Jackson competition was open to elite boxers. Mark Anthony Barriga, the lone Philippine Olympian in London, also won gold there. Bacho however, gave as well as he took. The Uzbek charged early, leading by by 4 points after the first round. but Bacho was also getting in some licks of his own, and gained more confidence in the second, cutting the difference to only 3 points. In the third, the Uzbek seemed bewildered by the young Filipino's tenacity and started back-pedalling while being rained on by Bacho's punches. Although he won the round, the Mandaluyong lad had to settle for a 10-12 setback. ABAP president Ricky Vargas and Secretary-general Patrick Gregorio both texted their delight to Executive Director Ed Picson, who leads the team here. "We are proud of the performance of Jade and Jonas. They fought with great courage and skill. I see a bright future for Philippine boxing with our young recruits from the ABAP grassroots program. They do our Chairman MVP proud. Laban lang!" said Vargas. The team is mentored by National Coaches Romeo Brin and Elmer Pamisa. Also in the tournament are International Technical Official Jesus San Esteban Jr. and referee Roger Fortaleza.
