DENNIS LAURENTE WILL OPEN BIG ?PINOY? FIGHT WEEK IN VEGAS

PhilBoxing.com

A day before the grand staging of the last mega boxing event of the year, Filipino welterweight Dennis Laurente will kick off a big weekend for Filipino fighters in Las Vegas next week.

The welterweight boxer from Palompon, Leyte told Philboxing.com that he is scheduled to fight Friday night at the Texas Station Hotel Gambling Hall and Hotel.

His opponent is American Kenny Abril 13-5-1 (7 KOs) of Rochester, New York.

This will be Laurente?s eight fight in the United States, dating back to June of 2008 and he has been successful ever since.

The 35 year old boxer has been training hard at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles since late September under the watchful eyes of trainer, Buboy Fernandez.

?Ayos naman, hard training na kami. Hataw na talaga ang training namin.? (Training is good. We?ve been training really hard.) Laurente said.

Laurente and Fernandez?s focus during this camp is to get used to fighting a left handed fighter. The 28 year old Abril is a southpaw.

?Pinag aaralan namin yung stance ng kaliwete, kasi kaliwete ang kalaban ko e.? (We are studying the stance of a left handed fighter because my opponent is left handed.)

Laurente has been sparring with southpaws during his two months of training at the Wild Card Gym, alongside his promoter and Filipino boxing star, Manny Pacquiao and other Filipino fighters like Michael Farenas, Ernie Sanchez and Dodie Boy Penalosa Jr.

All of them will be fighting on December 8th at the MGM Grand Arena, with Pacquiao headlining the event against Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez.

Laurente expressed confidence that he can open Fight Week successfully for his fellow Filipino fighters and for his boxing crazy nation.

?Okay lang naman kahit ako ang mauna. Medyo sanay na ako kahit saan ang laban at sa karanasan ko sanay na ako niyan.?

(It is okay if I fight first. I am used to fighting anywhere and I am used to such things with my experience.) explained the veteran boxer of 52 fights.

Today, Friday will be Laurente?s last day of sparring at the Wild Card Gym and he will now concentrate on pre-fight conditioning and achieving the 147 pound weight limit for his fight next week.

Laurente informed Philboxing.com that Michael Koncz of MP Promotions promised him a title fight next year if he successfully wins his upcoming bout with Abril.

The boxer?s manager, Johnny Elorde also confirmed the plans of a future title shot for Laurente.

?Dennis should beat this guy so he can fight for the title.? Elorde informed Philboxing.com.

Laurente is currently rated 5th by the World Boxing Council in the welterweight class according to Elorde.

It seems that the stakes just became higher for Dennis Laurente in Las Vegas.
