SOUTH AFRICAN PROMOTER AGREES TO STAGE REMATCH BETWEEN EDRIN DAPUDONG AND GIDEON BUTHELEZI

PhilBoxing.com

Even before the International Boxing Organization (IBO) could announce the result of its review of the video recording of the controversial World Junior Bantamweight Champion fight between the Philippines' Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong and South Africa's Gideon Buthelezi, the promoter of the fight, Golden Gloves of South Africa, has agreed to a rematch.

Shona Mac Taggart, events organizer of Golden Gloves Promotions, South Africa's biggest boxing promotions outfit, said the IBO furnished the boxing firm a copy of the letter complaint sent to the IBO by former North Cotabato Governor Manny Pinol, Dapudong's registered manager and patron.

The rematch has been tentatively scheduled for Feb. 16, 2013, Mac Taggart said in her email message sent to Gov. Pinol yesterday, Nov. 14.

Gov. Pinol filed the complaint following a split decision verdict in favor of the South African fighter even after Buthelezi was badly mauled and knocked down in the 9th round in a fight held Nov. 10 in the Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The complaint was centered on American boxing judge Michael Pernick who scored the 9th round round when Dapudong knocked down Buthelezi 10-9 instead of 10-8 which was the score given by British judge Reg Thompson and even the South African judge, Tony Nyangiwe who was obviously biased in favor of the local fighter.

Nyangiwe scored the fight in favor of Buthelezi 115-112 while Pernick scored it 115-113.

British judge Thompson had Dapudong the winner 114-113.

The South African media, including the promotion company's own website, wrote scathing reports about the result of the fight saying Buthelezi was "badly bruised and battered but got lucky with the judges."

Gov. Pinol said Dapudong will take a short rest before he starts training for the rematch.

Here is Shona Mac Taggart's letter to Gov. Pinol:

"Dear Mr. Pinol,

I am in receipt of your letter to IBO and we have no objection whatsoever to a rematch with Edrin and Gideon. It was a very good bout and could have gone either way. We are reasonable people and would not like to create a bad relationship with other boxing people. Your group was a pleasure to have visit us.

We will try to fit the bout in on our 16 February show or if it is not possible then as soon as we can thereafter.

Please let me have your phone number as talking person to person is always better than email.

I await your reply.

Kind Regards
Shona"
