Brandon Vera?s moment of truth comes up short but with a silver lining By Paul Factora PhilBoxing.com Sun, 05 Aug 2012 ![]() Saturday August 4, 2012. Los Angeles, California sets the stage for Brandon ?The Truth? Vera taking on former Pride Fighting Champion and former UFC champion Mauricio ?Shogun? Rua, as their bout headline UFConFox4 as the main event. Vera coming in as a very heavy underdog with an overlying consensus of being cut from the UFC pending a loss despite coming into the fight with a win over Elliot Marshall. Rua an international MMA legend is coming off a hard fought loss against Dan Henderson. "Rua was one of my heroes when I got into this game and I was pumped and ready to beat him," said Vera. As the MMA world expected nothing less than a one sided mauling were treated to an amazing display of heart and fortitude from both fighters. Vera?s technical striking and penchant for landing leg kick combinations had Rua in trouble at several points in the fight. Despite taking many hard strikes from an aggressive Rua, Vera proved resilient and determined by firing back his own strike combinations prompting the highly energetic Staple Center crowd to chant his name. ?It felt like a Rocky movie for me, I could hear them chanting my name.? Rua's aggressive attacks lead to Vera falling down to strikes in the 1st and 3rd rounds and having to fight out of several bad ground positions. Vera continued to show a strong fortitude. Several loud cracking leg kicks cause the former champion Rua to disengage from a striking battle and pressed for more of a clinch game. At the onset of the 4th round, it was still anyone's fight. After a quick exchange Rua lands a hard cross game changing right cross dislodging Vera?s mouthpiece and sending him to the canvas. This was quickly followed by a series of devastating ground strikes to finish the fight for Rua. The exciting fight on national TV was no doubt w all the UFC could hope for. UFC President Dana White was ecstatic over Brandon?s performance and affirmed that we would be seeing Vera back in the future. ?Vera came out to fight tonight, and showed the world why he belongs here,? said White. Although disappointed in the loss Brandon Vera held his head up high after the fight. ?I proved to myself and my fans that I?m still in the mix. I believe it was a moral victory and I will be back.?
