Twitter squabble between 50 cent and De La Hoya looks to shake the future of boxing

PhilBoxing.com

It looks like the back and forth conversation between Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya and musician/rapper 50 Cent (Curtis Jackson in real life) by the way of the social media platform Twitter provided an insight of things to come to the future of the sport.

Jackson dig at De La Hoya on Twitter yesterday and hinted that changes are coming to the sport most specifically one that involves his friend and WBA Light Middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The rapper tweeted to De La Hoya saying ?@oscardelahoya I don?t gamble Floyd do, but I bet you you won?t be promoting Floyd Mayweather no more. TMT PROMOTIONS.?

The rapper whose newly formed TMT (The Money Team) Promotions was licensed by the State of New York last week. He is also said to be applying for a promoter?s license in the State of Nevada where most big boxing events take place.

Jackson also called the former Olympian and boxer a ?baby girl and girl.? on his tweets which was a reaction to an earlier tweet by De La Hoya.

On Tuesday, De La Hoya tweeted, ?Everyone wanting to be a boxing promoter? Good luck, easier said then (than) done.?

That prompted a response from Jackson who started by ?@oscardelahoya sweet heart I?m surprised you would respond to me and Floyd starting company the way you did.?

He furthered by ?@oscardelahoya girl you can call me if you want to talk. Ok.? and ?@oscardelahoya girl now everybody wants to be a promoter girl you better stop.?

The rapper then warned De La Hoya saying ?Baby girl,@oscardelahoya,babygirl you here (hear) me,stop hating. STOP IT RIGH(T) NOW.?

De La Hoya then responded by saying ?@50cent you?re a boxing promoter? Didn?t know, but good luck maybe we can work someday.

Of which the rapper replied ?Classic.? and added ?Great back pedal, can you swim backwards like that to girl? lol I except that as a apology.

The verbal exchange between the two gives life to the rumors that Mayweather Jr. who uses Golden Boy Promotions to promote his previous fights, might eventually break away from De La Hoya?s company and instead promote his upcoming fights with Jackson.

Mayweather, who is serving a 90 day jail term in the state of Nevada for battery is due to be released next week. The undefeated boxer is one of the two top money makers in the sport of boxing and his fights are a constant blockbuster both in pay per view and ticket sales. If Mayweather Jr. does promote his upcoming fights with Jackson, that would be a huge financial loss to De La Hoya and his company. Mayweather?s own promotional outfit, Mayweather Promotions is not licensed at any state thereby his hiring of Golden Boy Promotions in the promotion of his previous fights. His last fight with Puerto Rican, Miguel Cotto drew an impressive 1.5 million buys, making it the second highest grossing pay per view event for a non-heavyweight bout. Incidentally, Mayweather?s 2007 bout with De La Hoya is the number 1 selling pay per view of all time in the sport, heavyweights included.

Jackson has also been tweeting pictures of former Olympic gold medalist and undefeated boxer, Yuriorkis Gamboa who is rumored to be signing with Jackson?s promotions soon. Gamboa broke ties with his previous promoter Top Rank and is now free to sign with anyone he wishes. Another ?free agent? boxer, Super Middleweight Andre Dirrell is said to follow as well.

The star appeal of the rapper and the signing of the top boxer in the world will surely make TMT Promotions a big player in the sport.

We will know in the following weeks if indeed these ?tweets? and taunts by Jackson are legitimate or if it was just merely a ?horse play? between two celebrities.
