DARCHINYAN PROTESTS DONAIRE DECISION
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Oct 2006
IBF/IBO flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan is set to protest the sixth technical decision awarded him in his title defense against Filipino Glen Donaire on Sunday.
Donaire who was dropped with a hard right in the fourth round turned his back and walked away at 1:27 of the sixth claiming his jaw was broken because of a headbutt. Referee Tony Weeks called in ring physician Dr. Jerry Davidson who examined Donaire and recommended that the fight be stopped.
Television replays gave no indication of a headbutt while the referee himself was unsure. But Darchinyan as well as the ringside commentators were certain that if Donaire’s jaw was broken it was caused by the vicious punches of the world champion who is known as one of the most devastating punchers in his division.
In a post fight interview Darchinyan protested the decision and his handlers are following it up by sending and a formal protest to the Nevada State Athletic Commission asking that the decision be changed to a KO.
Donaire is remembered by Filipino fight fans for a similar claim when he was knocked down by Z “The Dream” Gorres on the undercard of the first Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales fight. Donaire claimed he was headbutted and poked in the eye but was eventually dropped and called it quits saying he couldn’t see. Gorres won by a first round TKO.
