ALL EYES AND EARS ARE ON JONATHAN TACONING AS HE CHALLENGES WBC 108-LB CHAMP, KOMPAYAK PORPRAMOOK OF THAILAND TODAY

Not known to most Filipinos, unless one is a hardcore fan of the local sweet science, a 25-year old light flyweight boxer out of the famed Elorde Boxing Stable of Para?aque City will fight for the WBC Light Flyweight title against reigning champion, Kompayak Porpramook (29 years old) of Thailand on Thursday in the Provincial Hall of Buriram, Thailand.

That boxer is none other than reigning WBC International Light Flyweight ruler and WBC # 6, Jonathan Taconing (13-1-1, 10 Kos) of Siocon, Zamboanga del Norte.

According to Filipino scribe JM Siasat on his April 15th article on FightHype.com, he started lacing up the gloves at a very young age of 14. He had then registered a total of 30 amateur bouts figuring in fiesta boxing shows before getting inspired to turn pro right after seeing his boxing idol and fellow Filipino, Manny Pacquiao win against Thai opponent, Fahsan 3K Battery. This was when the former fought the Thai for the #2 spot in the IBF Featherweight rankings at that time on December 11, 2004 in Taguig City.

Despite that, he didn?t get to fight as a pro until over two years later on February 3, 2007 when he knocked out a certain Tinglo Perez at the Elorde Sports Center in Para?aque City. Since that winning effort, he had gone on to bag three consecutive fights two of which he won by way of TKO. And, then came the only loss in his record, a split decision loss to fellow Zamboange?o, Joe Galamiton in March 2008 on just his fifth fight; a fight that the admitted he lost fair and square. This loss might have discouraged some lesser people but not him. He promised to himself that he was never going to lose again and that, he exactly did.

He had, since that forgettable defeat, racked up five victories and a draw picking up the vacant WBC International Light Flyweight belt he currently owns along the way when he downed fellow Filipino world-title contender, Warlito ?WARS Katsumata? Parrenas of Negros Occidental for good in the 6th round of their fight at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City on July 31, 2010.

Ever since, he has had two successful defenses of his belt which came at the expense of Thais, Lookdiaw Tor Buamas (7-0-0, 4 KOs at that time) and Ngaoprajan Chuwatana (then 7-7-0, 7 KOs) in Pasay City and Legazpi City in Albay, respectively.

Now, on just his16th professional fight, he has a daunting task ahead of him as he tries to beat the defending champion, Kompayak Porpramook in his own territory this coming Thursday in Buriram, Thailand. Porpramook, who also goes by the name Suriyan Satorn, has an intimidating record of 44 wins in 47 fights with only 3 defeats; which makes him a very experienced veteran of the sport. Two of these only defeats happened on just his 9th and 13th professional fights with the second one coming from Filipino Allan ?Granada? Ranada of Bohol in September of 2002. His third defeat, on the other hand, was given by Hussein Hussein (who fight fans best remember as that Australian-Armenian who gave Jorge Arce two unforgettable fights in 2005) on May 5, 2006.

Since then, he has been undefeated with seven of his victims being Filipinos and with fifteen of his twenty two succeeding wins coming by way of knockout. Also, he has been fighting since 2000 and his experience might prove to be his advantage over Taconing who has only been fighting in the pro ranks for five years.

Such a record and accomplishments in the ring can really be intimidating especially now that he?s already a world champion but hopefully, with Taconing?s big heart and vaunted power in a southpaw stance, he would be able to figure out the veteran champion and enjoy his own version of the major upset that fellow Filipino Sonny Boy Jaro pulled off when he dethroned then WBC Flyweight champion, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam (Porpramook?s compatriot) just last March in Chonburi, Thailand.

The WBC Light Flyweight World title match-up between him and 1st-time defending champion, Kompayak Porpramook will be telecast live by Thailand?s Channel 7 in the Provincial hall of Buriram, which is a province North-East of Thailand.

Stay tuned for the result of this fight.
