DOMINGO-LEAR WEIGH-IN SET TODAY
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Fri, 14 Jul 2006
MANILA--The official weigh-in for the much-anticipated duel for the RP bantam title takes place today at the Games and Amusements Board office here, in advance of tomorrow's championship card at the Metropolis Mall in Ayala Alabang.
Philippine bantam king Michael Domingo, fresh from his impressive showing last July 2 underneath the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios showdown, will defend his title for the third time against Manila-based Johnny Lear of the Charlie Gamboa Stable.
Domingo, who was pinch-hitting for Rey 'Boom Boom' Bautista last July 2, stopped Mexican Alejandro Felix Montiel in the seventh round of the Mano-A-Mano card, but is conceivably in a much tougher task tomorrow against the talented Lear, who learned to box under the tutelage of the ALA Boxing Gym in Cebu before relocating to Manila.
Domingo himself fights out of the ALA Gym, Lear's former stable, so a battle for the bragging rights is shaping up between these two well-conditioned fighters.
Lear has been unbeaten in 5 fights since hooking up with businessman Charlie Gamboa, while Domingo has been virtually untouchable since joining the well-oiled SGG Stable in Cebu.
"I've prepared long and hard for this fight. I know Domingo is an outstanding defensive fighter with an intention to maim anyone that crosses paths with him inside the ring. But we'll see who blinks first," Lear said in an interview.
Domingo and trainer Edito 'Ala' Villamor are set to fly to Manila early this morning in time for the official weigh-in.
"I'm ready to wage war. Johnny Lear is very dangerous and a former champion. But I'm in tremendous shape too, so good luck to him," Domingo stressed, in an interview the other night at the residence of boxing patron Tony Aldeguer.
