PHILIPPINES SWEEPS MEXICO

PhilBoxing.com

The Philippines swept Mexico in their Mano-A-Mano fight card at the Araneta Coliseum Sunday with Manny Pacquiao putting the icing on the cake with his smashing twelve round decision over game Oscar Larios.

WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight champion began the overall rout with a hard-fought ten round decision over Silverio Ortiz . The southpaw Amonsot staggered Ortiz in rounds eight, nine and ten but couldn't finish him off and showed he still has a lot to learn.

Philippine super featherweight champion Jimrex Jaca had a hard time against Mexican brawler Hector Marquez who dropped Jaca on one knee in round three but referee Ver Abainza mysteriously failed to rule it a knockdown drawing the ire of the Mexican's corner. In the end a nasty cut caused by an accidental head-butt in round three and aggravated apparently by another head-butt in round seven forced the ring physician to direct Abainza to call a halt. Jaca won on the scorecards of all three judges for a seventh round technical decision.

Former WBC super flyweight champion Gerry Penalosa showed he still has what it takes to become a world champion when he engaged hard-hitting Mexican Tomas Rojas in an exciting, slam-bang encounter to score an impressive ten round decision.

Penalosa using a stinging right hook and flurries towards the end of the crucial middle rounds to influence the judges hit Rojas who was at least three inches taller with every punch in the book but although he was often shaken, the Mexican fought back with wicked shots of his own but failed to faze Penalosa.

Penalosa punished Rojas with stiff jabs and powerful uppercuts as the crowd chanted "Gerry! Gerry! In the middle of round five which saw a welt develop under the left eye of Rojas. Penalosa appeared to be bothered by a cut that was opened up just under the left eye in round three which Rojas tried to exploit with his right straight in the late rounds. But Penalosa showing that he had a fighting heart despite his 33 years refused to back-off and carried the fight to Rojas staggering the Mexican in the eighth round and sending his mouthpiece flying with a perfectly-timed left hook in round nine.

Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez who was at ringside said Penalosa would get a title shot at WBA champion Martin "El Gallo" Castillo of Mexico should Castillo retain his title in his July 22 defense against undefeated Japanese Nobuo Nashiro.

Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao's manager Shelly Finkel told Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that should Castillo win the Penalosa-Castillo title fight will be on the undercard of the third encounter between Pacquiao and legendary Mexican Erik "El Terrible" Morales at the Tomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas on November 18.

Penalosa said he was excited about the chance to once again become a world champion and said he was ready to regain a world title. Castillo has an impressive record of 30-1 with 16 knockouts while Penalosa has a record of 50-5-2 with 33 KO's.

In the final Philippine-Mexico brawl bantamweight champion Mischael Domingo from the famed ALA Gym of respected boxing patron Tony Aldeguer put on an excellent display of precise punching to score a seventh round TKO over veteran Alejandro Felix Montiel whose corner threw in the towel after Montiel was reeling from a two-fisted assault by Domingo who dominated from the opening bell.
