?TYSON? MARQUEZ RETAINS WBA TITLE WITH SPECTACULAR 1ST ROUND KO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 31 Oct 2011 ![]() WBA flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez has retained his title with a spectacular 1st round knockout of Panama?s Luis ?El Nica? Concepcion in Sonora, Mexico. The fight was a rematch of their first meeting in which Marquez won by an 11th round TKO on April 2 this year. Concepcion charged at Marquez at the bell and paid a heavy price as the hard-hitting Marquez dropped his three times before referee Rafael Ramos called a halt at 1:49 of the opening round. In their first title battle both fighters were down but Marquez made no mistake this time and effectively demolished Concepcion. Marquez is the same fighter who was completely out-boxed by Filipino flyweight Richie Mepranum in what was regarded as an upset ten round unanimous decision on March 12, 2010. Marquez moved up in weight to challenge then WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire and lost by an 8th round TKO. However, Marquez came back to defeat flyweight Edrin Dapudong by a 3rd round TKO last July 2. Marquez may consider a rematch with Mepranum to avenge his earlier defeat since Mepranum is coming off an eighth round unanimous decision over Rigoberto Casillas last October 27 which was his third straight win after losing by a 5th round TKO in a WBO title fight to Julio Cesar Miranda on June 12, 2010. Marquez? handlers headed by Fernando Beltran may also consider continuing the storied Mexican-Philippine rivalry by defending his title against Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation champion Rocky Fuentes of the famed ALA Gym who is ranked No. 8 by the WBA, No. 4 by the WBC, No. 5 by the IBF and No. 6 by the WBO. Other potential Filipino challengers are undefeated Milan Melindo and former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
