PONGSAKLEK BEATS SOSA RETAINS WBC FLYWEIGHT TITLE

Thai veteran Pongsaklek Wonjongkam retained his WBC flyweight title with a unanimous twelve round decision over former champion Edgar Sosa of Mexico at the 11th Infantry Regiment grounds in Bangkok, Thailand.
All three judges, Nobuaki Uratani of Japan, Herbert Minn of Hawaii and Steve Morrow of California scored the fight for Pongsaklek with two of them having Pongsaklek the winner 117-110 and third 116-111.
With the win the 34 year old southpaw improved his record to 82-3 with 45 knockouts while Sosa dropped to 43-6 with 26 knockouts.
The fight took place in hot and humid conditions and was free to the public.
At the weigh in on the eve of the fight supervised by WBC official Frank Quill of Australia both fighters came in at 112 pounds. The weigh in took place at the Paolo Memorial Hospital in Bangkok.
It was a disappointing loss for Sosa who won six fights in a row after losing his title to Filipino Rodel Mayol following a controversial head-butt that fractured his cheekbone and forced Sosa to rest for some six months.
Sosa won the WBC light flyweight title when he beat Filipino Brian Viloria, the reigning WBO flyweight champion in April 2004. Sosa made eleven successful defenses of the light flyweight title before the controversial loss to Mayol.
Sosa was coming off a 1st round KO of Julio Paz last July 2 while Pongsaklek was coming off a 1st round TKO of Pakasit Twin Gyms in a tune-up fight last August 4.
Pongsaklek has recorded the fastest knockout in the division with a 34 second demolition of Japan's Daisuke Naito.
There is a possibility that Pongsaklek may defend his title against one of several world ranked Filipinos including the undefeated Milan Melindo and OPBF champion Rocky Fuentes.
