WBC PRESIDENT SULAIMAN ISSUES STATEMENT ON INSTANT VIDEO REPLAY IN BOXING By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 20 Oct 2011 Jose Sulaiman, President of the WBC has expressed his strong opinion in favor of the instant video replay in high controversial actions in the ring, as it was proven during the world championship fight between Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson of last Saturday October 15 at Los Angeles, California last weekend. Sulaiman noted that in this specific case the referee (Pat Russell) awarded a TKO victory to the challenger Dawson, when Hopkins could not continue after he was pushed to the canvas. Sulaiman pointed out that the decision created " much confusion and protests from the promoter and camp of Hopkins," He said "the world saw the fight on television and the instant video replay, which clarified openly what had happened in the ring, while thousands in the arena also saw it on the giant screen." The WBC implemented in 2007 a rule, following the NFL's, which Sulaiman said "has proven excellent for fairness and justice." Using the instant video replay in highly controversial actions like cuts on the face of boxers to check for head butts or clean punches, punches connected at the ring of the bell, actions like the one of the Dawson-Hopkins fight are important since, as Sulaiman pointed out, " referees some times can not see with precision the regular action and the instant video replay helps the referee and commissioner to clarify them." He said the WBC is very proud to see that the boxing commissions of Pennsylvania and Nevada are accepting this rule, which in the 4 years of use of the WBC in the world has proven extraordinary for the sake of justice. Sulaiman disclosed that the WBC has been in contact with the California State Athletic Commission for a joint study if possible of this case. However, he made it clear that the WBC is not objecting nor disputing the decision of the referee; the WBC is committed to intervene as it was a World Boxing Council championship bout, with the actions to follow being our strict responsibility."
