Promising Marlon Tapales, the 19 year old prot?g? of Team Pacquiao member Rex ?Wakee? Salud has scored an impressive ten round unanimous decision over fighting Ugandan Martin Mubiru at the Panphil B. Frasco Memorial Sports Complex in Liloan, Cebu on Sunday.

The southpaw Tapales dropped his game Ugandan opponent in rounds 4, 6 and 7 and benefited from point deductions for head-butts by Mubiru in rounds 6 and 7.

All three judges scored the fight for Tapales. Two judges had Tapales the winner 96-90 while the third judge scored it for the Filipino 97-89. However, well-known boxing writer and Games and Amusements doctor Rene Bonsubre reported that the scorecards did not reflect ?the intense struggle that went on in the ring.?

Tapales and Mubiru are known to be technically sound boxers and proved that in the early rounds with perfectly straight punches and accurate counter-punches but according to Bonsubre Tapales found the weakness of the African?s mid-section and a solid right to the body dropped Mubiru for the first time in round four.

The Ugandan fought back but Tapales nailed Mubiru with a series of vicious hooks to ribs and dropped him for the second time in round six. The Ugandan beat the count but was deducted a point a few seconds later for a head-butt before he again got decked in round seven when he walked into a right hook from Tapales.

But the African still had a lot of fight left in him and stunned Tapales with some solid combinations before another clash of heads opened up a cut on the right eyelid of Tapales which resulted in a second point deduction being slapped on Mubiru by referee Ben Necessario.

Stung by the head-butts Tapalese went after his opponent who tried to claw back in the ninth round knowing he was behind on points. He launched a desperate attack in the tenth round but Tapales used his solid defense and footwork to stay out of trouble en route to a handy win.

With the victory Tapales improved to 19-1 with 6 knockouts while the 26 year old Mubiru fell to 8-3 with 5 knockouts.

Tapales was coming off a 4th round knockout of Thailand?s Yodpichai Sithsaithong last June 25 after he made a successful US debut with a six round majority decision over Alejandro Soliorio at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino on May 6, 2011. In that fight judge Richard Ocasio scored a 60-54 shutout for Tapalese while judge Burt Clements had the Filipino ahead 59-55. However, the third judge Tim Cheatham scored the fight even at 57-57.

Tapales has beaten some solid local opponents including Rey Migreno and Richard Plisa over whom he scored ten round unanimous decisions beating Migrenio on November 5, 2010 and Olisa on October 6, 2010.

Tapales won the Philippine light flyweight title with a unanimous decision over Charlie Cabilla on June 12, 2010.

Mubiru was coming off a split decision loss to rugged Danilo Pena over eight rounds in Aichi, Japan last August 7.

One of his biggest wins was an 8th round TKO of South Korea?s Big Yoo (Joon-in Yoo) on October 19, 2010. Big Yoo is the same fighter who lost by a 5th round knockout to world-rated AJ ?Bazooka? Banal who was in trouble but turned around in a hurry and connected with a cracking left hook to drop Big Yoo for the full count.
