TIPON BEATEN BY CHINA?S OLYMPIC SILVER MEDALIST
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 04 Oct 2011
2006 Doha Asian Gmes bantamweight gold medalist Joan Tipon tried his best but was overwhelmed by China?s 2010 Olympic silver medalist Zhang Jiawei 17-8 and was ousted in the AIBA 2011 World Boxing Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The end of the campaign of veteran Tipon leaves only two fighters from the Philippines six-man delegation in contention for a qualifying berth in the 2012 London Olympics but both Mark Anthony Barriga and Rey Saludar face two of the toughest opponents in their respective divisions and would have to overcome tremendous odds to qualify.
Barriga, the littlest fighter on the Philippine team battles China?s Olympic Games and World Champinship gold medalist Zou Shiming in the opening bout of today?s session while Saludar faces two-time US Olympian Rau Shee Warren.
Barriga is unfazed by the reputation of the shifty Chinese superstar Zou and is expected to go flat out to earn a coveted Olympic slot.
Saludar perhaps has the less formidable opponent in Warren whose assets are his quickness and his ability to avoid punches and to use his excellent footwork to stay out of trouble.
Tipon tried his hardest to seek a slot in the round of 16 against Zhang who also won a silver medal in the 2010 Combat Games to go with his Olympic silver where he lost to Anvar Yunusov of Tajikistan 6-3 after losing to the same fighter in the 2011 Asian Confederation Championships 20-15.
AIBA in a pre-fight report referred to the 22 year old Zhang?s showdown with the veteran Tipon as a ?mouthwatering clash? although Zhang justified being rated one of the favorites for the title by outclassing Iran's Armin Amjadian winning all three rounds of the bout (9-3, 5-4, 4-2) while Tipon was made to work harder in a 13-12 win over Argentina's Alberto Melian.
Tipon fought best in the opening round where he held Zhang to a two point lead 6-4. But the Chinese stepped up the tempo in the second round which he won 6-2 to go ahead 12-6 going into the third and final rounds where he kept up the pressure to win 5-2 for a total points spread of 17-8.
