PBA NUMBERS TELL THE STORY
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 24 Aug 2011
The PBA numbers for the just concluded 2010-2011 season tell the story. And that is playing three conferences per season is naturally better than two both in terms of gate receipts and overall attendance figures.
PBA officials refer to the 36th season as a banner year after reverting to the tried and tested formula of a three-conference format.
Latest figures released by the pro league show that the first PBA season in six years featuring three conferences earned a total of almost P90 million in gate receipts compared to the P75 million in gross earning in the two conferences of the previous 35th season.
While this season saw an increase of 20 percent over last season's gross sales the increase has to be attributed to having an extra conference
Although no figures were released the PBA Media Bureau rbeported that the average gameday attendance this season also posted a nine percent increase over the previous season.
Reverting back to the three-conference set-up was one of the major adjustments adopted by Commissioner Chito Salud when he assumed the position last year.
?By bringing back the three-conference format, we hope it can
translate to better gate attendance and improved TV ratings,? said Salud prior to the start of last season.
Originally used as the PBA?s first ever format since its inception in 1975, the three-conference set-up again sparked the desire to win a coveted Grand Slam, which Talk `N Text came close to achieving.
But the Tropang Texters were denied by a gutsy, decimated Petron Blaze Boosters lineup under rookie coach Ato Agustin that won an epic Game 7 in the Governors Cup Finals which served as a fitting finale to what turned out to be a remarkable season with some 17,000 fans trooping to the Smart Araneta Coliseum to witness the Boosters pull off a classic 85-73 win to foil the
Tropang Texters? bid for history.
