PHILIPPINES TO COMPETE IN 2011 WORLD SUB-JUNIOR, JUNIOR POWERLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

A strong Philippine team will compete in the 2011 World Sub-Junior and Junior Power-lifting Championships against some of the powerhouse competitors from the United States, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Finland in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada from August 29 to September 4.

Among the other countries participating are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Iraq, Japan, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Puerto Rico, South Africa, Sweden, Uzbekistan and Venezuela.

294 of the finest young power-lifters from 28 countries will compete in the event.

The Philippine team is composed of 18 year old Regie Ramirez, 17 year old Clark Cruz, 18 year old Lucas Lorenzo and 17 year old Raymond Debuque.

The coach and head of the Philippine delegation is Eddie Torres with assistant coach Allan Paje.

Ramirez who will compete in the 53kg class is the 2011 National Open Powerlifting Champion (59kg class), the 2011 National Sub-Junior Powerlifting champion (53kg class), 2010 Asian Sub-Junior Bench Press Champion (56kg class), 2010 Visayas Open Champion (56kg class), 2010 Visayas Open Best Lifter awardee and holder of 19 Philippine records including 8 junior, 10 sub=-junior and 1 open record.

Cruz is the 2011 National Open Powerlifting Champion (74kg class), 2011 National Sub-Junior Powerlifting champion (83 kg class), 2010 Asian Sub-Junior Bench Press Bronze medalist (75kg class), 2010 National Sub-Junior Powerlifting champion (75 kg class), 2010 National High School Champion (75kg class).

He is the holder of 22 Philippine records, 9 junior, 9 sub-junior and 4 open.

Lucas Lorenzo is the 2011 National Sub-Junior Powerlifting champion (93 kg class), 2011 National Sub-Junior Powerlifting Best Lifter awardee, 2010 Luzon Open Powerlifting Champion (93kg class), 2010 Asian Sub-Junior Bench Press Silver medalist (75kg class), 2010 National Bench Press Sub-Junior champion (82.5 kg class and 2010 National High School Champion (82.5kg class).

Lorenzo is the holder of 14 Philippine records, 5 junior, 5 sub-junior and 4 open.

The other member of the team is Debuque 2011 National Open Powerlifting Champion (120kg class), National Sub-Junior Powerlifting champion (120 kg class), 2011 National Open & Sub-Junior Bench Press Champion (120kg class), 2010 Asian Sub-Junior Bench Press Champion (125kg class),, National l Sub-Junior Powerlifting champion (125 kg class) and 2010 National College Champion (125kg class) having set 11 Philippine records (5 junior, 5 sub-junior, 1 open).

All four youngsters are second generation Philippine Powerlifting team members. Ramirez is the nephew of current World record-holder and new all-time pound-for-pound strongest Filipina, Anita Koykka.

Cruz is the son of many-time Asian champion and Philippines? all-time strongest man in Powerlifting, Eddie Torres while Lorenzo is the nephew of the former Asian Open Bench Press record holder Marco Lorenzo. Debuque is the son of former strongest man in the Philippines and 2-time Asian Open gold medalist Ramon Debuque.

Ramirez is coached by former world champion Tony Koykka who is Anita?s husband. Cruz & Lorenzo are coached by Torres, while the younger Debuque is coached by his father Ramon.

Lorenzo is currently studying in Ateneo de Manila, Cruz is enrolled in De La Salle Zobel, Debuque is a student at the University of the Philippines, while Ramirez had just graduated from Valencia High School in Ormoc City.
