THAILAND?S SURIYAN DETHRONES ROJAS TO WIN WBC SUPER FLYWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

Thailand?s Suriyan Sor Rungsival has dethroned Mexico?s lanky Tomas Rojas to win the WBC super flyweight title by a unanimous twelve round decision at Khunmuangsri Stadium in Srisaket Province.

All three judges scored the fight for the smaller but strongly built Thai

. Takeaki Kanaya of Japan had Suriyan the winner 115-114, Daniel Vande Wiele of Belgium had Suriyan winning by a much wider 116-112 margin while Burt Clements from Las Vegas, Nevada also had the Thai challenger a comfortable winner 117-111. The referee was California?s Jack Reiss.

On the eve of the fight Suriyan said he was ready to bring the world title to Thailand. The 26 year old said he was ?very confident that I will beat him (Rojas) or even knock him out."

He said it would be great to win the title that Thai boxing legend Payao Poontharat won some 28 years ago.

Suriyan?s manager Suchart Pisitwutthinan said he believed his boxer was in better shape than Rojas and predicted that the weather may pose problems for the Mexican champion. However, Rojas who was making the third defense of his title said he didn?t expect the weather to be a problem since he had been in Thailand for five days even as he predicted he would stop the challenger within seven rounds..

Boxing columnist Soi Mangmee from Khao Sod newspaper tipped Suriya to win on points because he and his staff had worked hard in the Thai's preparations for the bout.

He said Rojas was not too tough to beat and that he could be weakened by the hot weather.

Soi reported that while Rojas was faster and taller and also had a good defense he would ?find it tough to handle Suriyan who is likely to attack the champion with body blows" noting that the Thai stopped seven opponents in his 18 wins against five losses and one draw, while Rojas, 31, is 36-12-1, 24KOs. The title-holder has been stopped twice in his 12 defeats.

The boxing columnist also pointed out that "No Mexicans have won in Thailand in recent memory."

Rojas won the title with a twelve round unanimous decision over Japan?s Kohei Kono in Saitama on September 20, 2010.

Suriyan was coming off knockouts in his last three fights including a 5th round KO of Filipino Javier Malulan on March 3 this year followed by a 3rd round TKO over Little Roseman on April 12 and a 5th round TKO of Boido Simanjuntak last June 14.
