AUSSIE PROMOTER MANIATIS PAID A HEAVY PRICE FOR PETALCORIN?S PABA TITLE WIN

PhilBoxing.com

Well known Australian promoter and KO TV boxing show host Peter Maniatis has paid a heavy price for Randy Petalcorin?s Pan Asian Boxing Association Interim light flyweight title victory over Michael Rodriguez in a Gerry Penalosa promotion in Mandaue City last Saturday.

The talented 19 year old southpaw Petalcorin won the interim title and improved his record to 14-1 with 12 knockouts after his opponent Michael Rodriguez was disqualified in the 8th round when he punched Petalcorin while he was down and referee Ver Abainza was trying to separate the fighters. Rodriguez was deducted a point and since Petalcorin was unable to continue, Rodriguez whom Maniatis described as a ?dirty fighter? was disqualified at 1:39 of the eighth round..

Petalcorin had dropped Rodriguez in the previous round with a right hook.

Significantly, Rodriguez was not even rated by the PABA and had a pathetic record of 12 wins as against 29 losses and only 3 knockouts when he entered the ring for the title fight.

What was even worse is that the likeable Maniatis appeared to have had to pay a stiff price for the low-level regional title fight.

He told the Daily Inquirer in the presence of internationally respected referee Bruce McTavish and Manny Pacquiao's trainer when he won the WBC flyweight title in 1998 Rick Stahely about how much he was required to shell out for the Petalcorin fight.

Maniatis said he had to pay US$200 for each of the three judges plus another $200 for the referee. He also paid for the roundtrip airline ticket and the hotel bills of referee Abainza who flew to Cebu from Manila while the judges Samson Libres, Edward Ligas and Teddy Alivio were all Cebu residents.

Maniatis also disclosed that he had to pay $850 for the PABA championship belt, the sanction fee of $1,500, the fight supervisor?s fee of $500, a total of $3,000 for the purses of both boxers. He also said he paid an additional $1,000 to be registered as a promoter.
