SALUDAR, 6 OTHERS OFF TO CHINA OPEN By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 May 2011 ![]() Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar and younger brother and bronze medal winner Victorio Saludar lead the Philippine team that will campaign in the tough China Open Boxing Championship starting Sunday in Guiyang Province. Joining the Saludar brothers will be Ricky Dulay, Wilfredo Lopez and the Tacuyan brothers, Orlando and Rolando as well as promising female boxer Ana Liza Cruz, will compete in the flyweight division. The seven member national team along with coaches Roel Velasco, the 1992 Barcelona Olypic Games bronze medalist and multi-titled Roland Chavez. Delegation head Ed Picson, executive director of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines said ?The China event will gauge the worthiness of our boxers against some of the best fighters in Asia.? Victorio competes in the 49 kg. division, Rey at 51kgs., Dulay at 56kgs., Orlando at 60 kgs., Rolando at 64kgs., and Lopez at 69kgs. The elder Saludar ruled his class in the 2010 Asian Games, stunning hometown bet Yong Chang, 13-11, in the golf medal bout. He received a big P3 million incentive from ABAP chairman, esteemed businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan who heads PLDT-Smart which has been in the forefront of supporting Philippine sports. President of the ABAP is Ricky Vargas who is president of Maynilad. Also in the delegation is Carina Picson, a member of the Asian Boxing Confederation women division who recently passed the International Technical Official examination in Turkey. The Philippines won three bronze medals in this tournament last year, according to Picson, with the medals coming courtesy of Lopez, Jerson Nietes and Aston Palicte.
