By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 21 May 2011
Super featherweight Michael Farenas faces a new opponent in former WBO North American Boxing Organization champion Daniel ?The Prophet? Attah of Nigeria at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa on Sunday, Manila Time.
After a couple of opponents backed out Farenas, a prot?g? of former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa was scheduled to face Joseph Laryea who lost to Ricky Burns in a WBO title fight when he retired in the seventh round last March 12.
Penalosa earlier disclosed that should Farenas who has been training under Freddie Roach at his Wild Card Gym win impressively a possible bout against undefeated featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa looms.
At the official weigh it was learned that the new opponent of Farenas would be 34 year old Attah who returned to the ring after an almost two year absence on July 17, 2010 and suffered a 2nd round TKO to Antonio De Marco but recovered with a 2nd round knockout win over tough Marvin Quintero who had a record of 20-2 with 16 knockouts.
Attah is a southpaw who has been in with some of the best including Acelimo Freitas to whom he lost a 12 round decision in a WBA/WBO title fight on August 3, 2002. Attah also dropped a 12 round decision to Nate Campbell in an IBF title eliminator on January 9, 2004 .
However, Attah lost by a 4th round knockout to Urbano Antillon in an WBO/NABO interim and NABF title fight on September 5, 2008.
Both fighters are southpaws. Farenas weighed in at 129.2 pounds while Attah tipped the scales at 129.8.
The 26 year old Farenas has a record of 30-3-3 with 26 knockouts and is coming off an action-packed ten round majority decision victory over Ariel Delgado last January 14 in Paranaque City.
