Pinays compete at the World Women?s Boxing Championship

PhilBoxing.com

A game but inexperienced trio of young lady fighters will carry the country?s colors in the coming World Women?s Boxing Championships April 22-30 in Antalia, Turkey.

Except for victories in local tournaments the past two years and the National championships, Nicezza Petecio, a flyweight, featherweight Micah Joy Hugo and Wennie Cline Verano, nonetheless, are given a fair chance by their leaders in the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines to bring honors to the county in the tournament reserved for fighters aged 15-18.

Petecio, younger sister of 2010 World Women?s Championships veteran Nesthy Petecio, is the reigning National Boxing championships gold medal winner in the 48-kilogram division, while Hugo the 57-pound queen of the 2009 National Open.
?Mga bago pa ang mga bata natin at wala pang experience sa international arena, pero makaaasa ang mga kababayan natin na at least isa man lamang sa kanila ay makapasok sa final sa kanilang weight category,? herad coach Elias Recaido, gold medalist in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, said during yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.

The girls, according to Recaido, have been in deep training in Baguio City since January.

?While they still lack in international experience, all three have shown potentials to make it big time in international competitions,? Recaido said. ?And we hope the world youth championships to give them more weapons they can use in future international meets, including the Olympics.?

The team, headed by team manager Karina Picson , who also accompanied the girls to the session, sponsored by Coca Cola Bottling Philippines, TV-5 and FILA, leaves April 20 for Turkey having only two days to acclimatize themselves to the biting Turkey cold weather.

Also appearing as SCOOP guest was Petecio?s older sister Nesthy, who will be representing the country in tough Asian world Cup elimination tournament set May 5-9 in Kaikou, China along with Alice Kate Aparri.

The Asian World Cup elimination is part of the duo?s build up program for next year?s Olympic qualifying tournaments.
The younger Petecio,16-year-ol, of Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, Hugo, 17 of Puerto Princesa, and Verano, 17 of Valencia, Bukidnon, products of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines? mass-based and grassroot development program in the hope of discovering fresh talents for its quest of the country?s first Olympic gold medal.

?These three are only a few of the young and fresh talents ABAP has discovered from the provinces in our continuing search for new faces as part of our Road to the Olympic Gold under president Ricky Vargas,? Picson, wife of ABAP executive director Ed Picson, said.

?We actually had discovered several more new bloods, but they?re too raw to be sent wearing the country?s colors in international competitions in the magnitude of the world championships,? she added.
