HEATH ELLIS WINS ASIAN BOXING COUNCIL CONTINENTAL TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

In his second fight following a stunning 4th round knockout at the hands of hard-hitting Steve Maxwell when he lost the IBF Pan Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council titles, Heath Ellis has come back with a vengeance to win the vacant WBC ABCO Continental light middleweight title in Sunshine, Victoria, Australia.

The 22 year old Fil-Australian blasted Thailand?s Yodmongkol Singwancha to win by a second round knockout and improve his record to 14-2-1 with 7 knockouts.

Earlier, Ellis defeated Benny Horra in a rough and tumble bout to score an eight round unanimous decision last November 19.

The loss to Maxwell was a setback for the fighter nicknamed ?The Heat? who was looking to improve his rankings in the search for international recognition.

The loss by Ellis set back the big plans multi-titled Victorian promoter Peter Maniatis had for Ellis whose mother is a Filipina and father an Australian, Neil Ellis.

Maniatis who was looking forward to a great future for the young Fil-Aussie said the fight started well with Ellis "showing good movement and silky skills to win the first 3 rounds and hurting Maxwell at times.?

However, Maniatis reported that at the start of the fourth round Maxwell ? landed a big left hook which seemed to hurt Ellis and blood started to come out from his nose. Maxwell sensed Ellis was hurt and came in to finish the fight but Ellis responded and started trading blows with Maxwell?

Maniatis said ?the last punch was a bomb that landed on Heath to send him to the canvas and the referee (Ignatius Missailidis) counted Heath Ellis out at 1.23 seconds of the 4th round.?

The promoter said he told Ellis after the fight to remember that ?Manny Pacquiao was knocked out early in his career and he came back and achieved great things and at 21 years old he has time on his side to come back and build his career again.?.Maniatis was referring to Pacquiao's knockout at the hands of Rustico Torrecampo in Pacquiao's first setback after 11 straight wins.

The promising young fighter?s uncle, former world IBF junior lightweight champion and IBO champion at lightweight, junior welterweight and light middleweight Lester ?Master Blaster? Ellis was at ringside to watch his nephew defend his IBF Pan Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council welterweight titles against Maxwell.

The former world champion had earlier maintained that Heath had ?the talent, punch and power? to give trash talking opponent Steve Maxwell a boxing lesson and then knock him out in the later rounds of a scheduled 12 round title fight.

But that didn?t happen and it was the other way around as Maxwell knocked out Ellis.

Against Yodmongkol, Heath?s father Neil Ellis said his son ?fought well and was going well? in the title fight before he took out the 23 year old Thai fighter whose record dropped to 11-10-1 with 7 knockouts.

Yodmongkol who also lost to Maxwell by a 5th round knockout last August 27 suffered his fourth straight defeat at the hands of Ellis, including 3 knockouts and one TKO.

In an email to insidesports.ph, Ellis said Keith who is now a teacher handling fourth graders is ?settling in again? and plans on getting married in November. Ellis said the young fighter was training hard because of a heavy schedule of fights lined up for him.
