RING MAGAZINE POUND-FOR-POUND DECISION OUT TOMORROW

PhilBoxing.com

Ring Magazine?s decision on whether to keep Manny Pacquiao as its pound-for-pound king or replace him with light middleweight champion Sergio Martinez of Argentina will be announced on March 17, Friday, Manila Time.

Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins informed the Inquirer early Wednesday ?We just updated The Ring ratings, including pound-for-pound. The results will be posted, along with some quotes, tomorrow (March 16) on ringtv.com.? That would be March 17, Thursday Manila Time.

Collins explained that the ?biggest difference between the divisional and pound-for-pound ratings is that divisional ratings are objective and based almost entirely on results within the particular weight class.?

On the other hand Collins said ?pound-for-pound ratings are subjective with more weight given to opinion, potential and results from all divisions in which the fighter has competed.?

Martinez who was earlier voted 2010 ?Fighter of the Year? by the Boxing Writers Association of America over three-time winner and BWAA ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao scored an impressive 8th round TKO over Sergiy ?Razor? Dzinziruk to win the WBC Diamond Belt and retain the Ring Magazine belt.

The win together with a sensational 1st round knockout of Paul Williams in an earlier fight has enhanced the stature of Martinez. Some writers believe the Argentine?s recent wins has enabled him to stake his claim to dislodging Pacquiao as the pound-for-pound king.

Well known boxing writer Lem Satterfield of boxingscene.com quoted Martinez as conceding that Pacquiao is still No.1. Martinez said "Personally, right now, I feel that I'm No. 2 ahead of Mayweather. I feel that Manny Pacquiao is No. 1.,"

However, Martinez told Satterfield "But the thing is that if Pacquiao doesn't have a great performance against Mosley, and if he doesn't beat Mosley the way that I beat Dzinziruk, then I'm right there. " The Argentine added. "If that doesn't happen, then I should take the No. 1 spot. And, of course, if Mosley beats Pacquiao, then, of course, I'm definitely the No. 1 guy."

Martinez will receive the ?Fighter of the Year? award on May 6 in Las Vegas on the eve of Pacquiao?s showdown with three-time world champion Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
