FIL-AM GIRL LONE PHILIPPINE BOXER IN MEXICAN REALITY SHOW

PhilBoxing.com

Fil-Am female boxer Crystal Hoy will be the lone representative from the Philippines is a boxing reality show ?All Against Mexico? which will begin next week in Chiapas, Mexico and will go on for six weeks.

The father of Hoy who was born in Wichita, Kansas is AmerIcan while her mother is from Cebu City.

Las Vegas-based boxing trainer Tony Martin told the Inquirer that for the past six weeks Crystal has been training at the Floyd Mayweather Jr gym, under the watchful eye of Mayweather?s trainer and uncle Roger Mayweather. Martin said ?I must admit Crystal is looking good. When I spoke to her today and asked if she was ready for this competition her answer was-------- You bet I am!?

Martin, a longtime Cebu resident said that although Hoy?s record of 5-4-2 with 2 knockouts ?doesn?t look that good this girl can fight. It was just a question of a lack of good training, and not being able to get the fights. He also said Hoy had eye surgery which kept her out of the ring from 2005 to 2008.?

The Fil-Am girl has fought good opponents including Monica Lovato (12-1, 4 KO?s) for the NABF super flyweight title on July 28, 2007. Crystal Hoy lost on points, even though she dropped Lovato twice in the 7th round. She also gave Alicia Ashley, former WBC 122lb champion, and current 122lb NABF champion a tough fight before losing on points..

The 30 year old Crystal has never been to the Philippines but told Martin she would love to visit some day. The trainer described Hoy as ? a very humble girl, with a very nice attitude and sense of humor. She has great work ethic, disciplined and self motivated.?

The reality-type show with 16 contenders is produced by MapiTV and hosted by female boxing star Maureen ?The Real Million Dollar Baby? Shea.

The show will be shown in Mexico and the United States, with some of the best female boxers from around the world facing a team of Mexican female boxers over a six-week period.

The lone Philippine representative said ?I feel confident. Now I can begin to display my skills and show the real me, not the ?watered-down? me.It's a great responsibility to represent the Philippines because we've got Nonito Donaire, Pacman, and even Ana Julaton and Elena Reid. I feel like this is an opportunity for me to push us further and be in against some of the best fighters in the world."

"I'm very happy to have one of the females representing the Philippines on our show," said Shea, the NABF female featherweight champ who also promoted Hoy's last fight. Shea added "I think there is a lot of boxing talent in the Philippines. This is a country that has risen to its place in boxing on hard work and courage, and that says a lot about the character of it's people."

Crystal Hoy made an impressive start to her career after relocating from her native Wichita, Kansas to Las Vegas to start her boxing career winning three and drawing two of her first five fights. But after being medically suspended in 2005 for a retinal tear following career-saving surgery and battling it out with the commissions, Hoy was granted a license to fight again and couldn't have faced a tougher opponent in her first fight back.

Hoy recalls "I wasn't going to go in there and be anybody's opponent," in reference to her 2008 NABF super-flyweight title match with 11-1 Monica Lovato in New Mexico.

Hoy admittedly gave away the first half of the fight as she struggled to shed the ring-rust, but scored two knockdowns in the seventh as she tried to rally down the stretch. Hoy lost a razor-thin eight round decision.

Hoy's career has been up-and-down since then, but with the help of this show, she hopes to show the true potential of Filipina boxers on the world stage.
