BUHAIN ATTENDS WBC NIGHT OF THE CHAMPIONS

PhilBoxing.com

Still ecstatic over Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao's convincing TKO over "El Terrible No More" of Mexico, GAB Chairman Eric R. Buhain is already in Cancun, Mexico to attend its well-prepared celebration of the event dubbed as the "Night of the Champions".

Buhain is one of the members of the Board of Governors of the World Boxing Council and he is the Vice-Presient for its regional boxing arm, the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation or the OPBF.

What is the purpose for this global affair which assembles all its member nations as WBC allies?

On the 29th of January 2006, the well-deserved awards and recognition will be bestowed upon the reigning world champions of professional boxing ranging from the lowest to the highest weight categories under the sanctioning of the WBC. And the great thing about it is the fact that the list includes great Filipino fighters of the ring topbilled of course by the great Manny Pacquiao.

That is why, the GAB Chairman is there to personally witness the event, representing the country in behalf of Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Closer to home, and this one Chairman Buhain will miss, since it has already been declared that today the 27th of January will be "Manny Pacquiao Day" for the Philippines as he sets foot in the country to grace the fiesta royale grand celebration.

What do we expect to get out of this WBC event? Buhain once told me that, "there are two reasons to be there. One is to represent the country as its WBC representative in the country and second, to secure a place in the WBC for our Filipino pro boxers."

From that conversation, I knew that the good GAB Chairman is also targetting the definite attendance of top people form the WBC to the incoming "1st GAB Philiipine Annual Boxing Convention" to be launched here in our country on April 18-21 of 2006. Buhain's efforts now and the fruits of his travel will be seen during the convention proper.

By the way, big salute in advance to the City of Manila and their ever dynamic chief exectutive mayor Lito Atienza, who has committed as co-partner of the GAB for the success of this first ever pro boxing affair envisioned to also bring into our fold the leaders of the world sanctioning bodies in boxing to the Philippines. Also, worthy to mention was the success of this writer's talk with the good Assistant Secretary of Department of Tourism Cynthia Carrion per instruction from Secretary Ace Durano for the DOT's role in this convention spearheaded by the GAB. Bingo! They have seen the benefits of the convention for tourism purposes. And let us be optimistic that when Buhain arrives next week, good news from his WBC attendance will be made known to the GAB Board.

For the information of the reading public worldwide, especially organizations and individuals who may have some interest in professional boxing, GAB is now moving heaven and earth to have this materialized. This is not only intended to showcase the world-class Filipino boxers and to create a sound regulatory and supervisory competent exercise of GAB's authority and powers, but in the end creating an avenue of reasons and encouragement for the young Filipino population in order to develop many more Manny Pacquiaos in the future. I must tell you this, there is so much that awaits you in professional boxing . For one's greatness and for the honor and glory of our nation.

May this dreamed pro boxing convention in the Philippines under the leadership of the Buhain's administration in the GAB and with the support of both the public and private sectors will lead us to a new bright dimension and strenght to continue our conquest in putting our nation into the global map of Boxing.

In the affirmative side of thinking, I fervently hope that the group of Filipinos living in the American northwest like in Seattle, Washington, especially the Borromeo clan headed by Cicero D. Borromeo Sr. will help us in whatever way they could to ease little burden in the light of the upcoming major event this coming April 2006.
