Ali Center Celebrates Martin Luther King and Ali's Birthday PhilBoxing.com Sun, 16 Jan 2011 ALI 69th BIRTHDAY & MLK DAY CELEBRATION January 17 - 9:30AM - 5:00PM It has become tradition for the Ali Center to celebrate its founder?s birthday in a way that welcomes and involves the community. This year, on Monday, January 17?Muhammad Ali?s 69th birthday?the tradition lives on with greatly reduced admission prices (and the opportunity to tour for free), signings by special guests, and a host of other exceptional events. The day also marks the commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. King?s ?I Have a Dream? speech will be shown all day, on the hour, beginning at 10:00 a.m., in the Center?s auditorium, at no cost to the public. Adult and student admission will be $2, and children 12 years and under will be admitted for FREE. Visitors have the opportunity to tour the Center?s award-winning exhibits for FREE if they bring in a cell phone that day for recycling. This incentive is part of the Alltech-Muhammad Ali Center Global Education and Charitable Fund announced last year, that was created to allow individuals an opportunity to give the gift of communication to others in third world countries where having a new phone is a luxury. Proceeds from the sale of the phones will go to the Fund which raises money to support a range of educational and humanitarian initiatives around the world. Recycling boxes will be available. Two special guest signings will occur during the day. Earl Lloyd, the first African American to play in the NBA (National Basketball Association) and to win an NBA Championship, will be in the Center?s lobby to meet-and-greet the public from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Autographed pictures of Earl ?The Big Cat? Lloyd, who is just shy of his 83rd birthday, will be on hand while supplies last. Greg and Scott Scinta?twin brothers, graphic artists, Louisville natives, and co-creators of the new Muhammad Ali Through the Years print?will will be in the lobby from 12:00 noon-3:00 p.m.?to autograph your copy. This poster features a variety of Ali memorabilia artfully arranged in a wooden box that forms a unique pictorial of Ali?s past and present life. A Kentucky Opera performance at 2:00 pm in the lobby showcasing two songs from their OH FREEDOM! Program: ?Down by the Riverside? and ?This Little Light of Mine.? They will finish by leading the crowd in a round of ?Happy Birthday? for Ali. |
