DIB-VILLANUEVA WBO ORIENTAL TITLE FIGHT: Speed versus Power PhilBoxing.com Fri, 07 Jan 2011 ![]() Lorenzo Villanueva. Cebu City - It will be a match up of power versus speed when undefeated Filipino boxer Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva defends his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental Featherweight title against the sleek and fast Australian Billy "The Kid" Dib on March 12 in Perth, Australia. It will also be the first foreign and major fight for the 25-year-old southpaw from North Cotabato who is now fighting under the promotional banner of ALA Boxing and managed by the Braveheart Boxing Club of former governor Manny Pinol. Villanueva holds an immaculate record of 18 wins with 17 knockouts. Compared to the 25-year-old Dib who has already campaigned in the United States and has fought for the world title against Steven Luevano, the orphan from Midsayap town in North Cotabato, has fought only in the Philippines and only has two recognizable boxing names in his list of stoppage victims - former Asian Games gold medallist Eric Canoy, from whom he snatched the WBO title, and former World Boxing Council Jr. Featherweight International champion Balweg Bangoyan. "This will be a tough fight for Villanueva but at 25, it is time to get him out of the country and start fighting quality opponents so he would be able to prove his worth," said Pinol who nurtured Villanueva since he was a young and gawky amateur fighter up until today. ALA Boxing Promotions President Michael Aldeguer, who holds the promotional rights over the Braveheart boxers of North Cotabato, has approved the fight saying that this would be a good opportunity for Villanueva to make a name. Dib holds the reputation of being a slick fighter who toys with his opponent inside the ring using his excellent movement and footwork, something that Villanueva lacks because the Filipino champion is known to be more a brawler than a technical fighter. The Australian challenger also holds a huge edge in experience having fought 31 times winning 30 with 18 KOs against his lone defeat to Luevano. Dib has also stopped all of his opponents in his last six fights. Villanueva, however, is known to have a huge heart, granite chin and most of all power. Given their contrasting styles, the Villanueva-Dib WBO Oriental championship is expected to be a classic match up between power and speed. The fight will be aired live on Australian TV hosted by sports commentator Peter Maniatis. ![]() |
