NIETES DEFENDS WORLD TITLE EARLY NEXT YEAR
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 30 Dec 2010

WBO minimumweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes will defend his world title early next year against mandatory challenger Raul ?Rayito? Garcia of Mexico.
ALA Promotions patron Tony Aldeguer said they had received a formal letter from WBO president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel informing them that Nietes has to face former champion Garcia in his next fight.
Aldeguer said they had decided to stage the fight sometime in March or April, prior to pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao?s welterweight title defense against Shane Mosley in Las Vegas on May 7.
The 28 year old Garcia won the WBO title from Florante ?The Little Pacquiao? Condes by a split decision in The Mexican?s hometown of Laz Paz on June 14, 2008 despite being dropped by Condes in the twelfth round.
Garcia later won the interim title with a twelve round split decision over Luis De La Rosa on October 30 this after scoring a 7th round TKO over Samuel Garcia on September 4 to set himself up for a title shot at Nietes. Garcia has a record of 29-1-1 with 17 knockouts.
Nietes who enters the ring with a pet python draped around his shoulders when fighting in the Philippines, is also 28 years old and has a record of 27-1-3 with 15 knockouts.
He won the vacant title with a unanimous decision over Thailand?s Pornsawan Porpramook on September 30, 2007 and has had five successful title defenses including three in Mexico.
In his last title defense, Nietes who is an accomplished boxer won a lopsided twelve round decision over Mario Rodriguez in Sinaloa, Mexico.
Nietes has already started light training in preparation for his title defense although no definite date or venue has been chosen.
The talented Nietes, one of only two current world champions also works with strength and conditioning coach Dr. Pio Solon who has helped fighters like OPBF flyweight champion Rocky Fuentes and world-rated Milan Melindo add power and explosiveness to their arsenal.
