ABAP Mindanao Area Tourney PhilBoxing.com Wed, 15 Dec 2010 ![]() PANABO City, Davao Del Norte - The province of Misamis Oriental is slowly becoming one of the country?s newest hotbeds with the way they have been dominating an ongoing major amateur boxing tournament here. MisOr?s 13 of its 15 entries made it into the gold medal round of the 2010 PLDT-ABAP Mindanao Area Amateur tournament, a testament to the longtime and effective boxing program put up by the province?s main benefactor Governor Oscar Moreno. Creating major impression for Misamis Oriental is Rafael Jalnaiz, son of former National team standout Bobby Jalnaiz who, along with national team coach Elmer Pamisa, are also responsible for the province?s emergence as a topnotch boxing breeding ground. Davao Del Norte sent 10 of its 14 boxers to the finals with all finalists poised to give Misamis Oriental a tough challenge for the overall team recognition. ?Competition is getting more fierce as we approach the finals. We?re optimistic about spotting fresh talent for the nationals in Cagayan De Oro this January, said ABAP Executive Director Ed Picson who is personally observing the progress of Mindanao?s young prospects. The finals of this event participated in by 232 boxers representing 21 clubs from different parts of the region was slated late yesterday, with the region?s most prestigious trophy, the Tonyboy Cup also at stake. The gold medalist of Mindanao tournament will battle fellow champions of Luzon and Visayas during the national championships from January 22-28 next year in Cagayan De Oro City. ?With international tournaments for junior and youth boxers coming next year, we?re looking to recruit strong material for our program,? added Picson. Medals up for grabs in this five-day event are in the kids division (11 to 12 years old), school boys (13 to 14 years old), junior boys (15 to 16 years old), youth boys (17 to 18 years old) and elite men (19 to 25 years old). ![]() |
