PACQUIAO IS 2010 USSA ATHLETE OF THE YEAR NOMINEE

Pound for pound king and Philippine congressman Manny Pacquiao is one of the twelve nominees for the 2010 United States Sports Academy (USSA) Male Athlete of the Year, USSA has announced in their website.

Pacquiao, who has been nominated owing to his victory against Ghana's Joshua Clottey and Mexico's Antonio Margarito this year and having won a historical 10 world titles in 8 weight divisions, goes alongside Drew Brees of the United States, the New Orleans quarterback who helped won the Saints' first ever Super Bowl; Kobe Bryant (US, basketball) of the NBA world champions Los Angeles Lakers; Ashton Eaton (US, track and field) who set a world record in heptathlon; Roy Halladay (US, baseball) who threw a perfect game in the regular season; Jimmie Johnson (US, auto racing) who won his fifth consecutive NASCAR championship; Phil Meckelson (US, golf) who won the 2010 Masters and his 4th major championship; Rafael Nadal (Spain, tennis) who is the youngest grand slam winner this year; Cameron Newton (US, college football) who led Auburn to a 12-0 record; David Rudisha (Kenya, track and field) who broke the world record in 800 meters twice; David Villa (Spain, soccer) who powered Spain to the FIFA world cup title; and Shaun White (US, snowboarding/skateboarding) who won the gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Twelve Female Athletes were also nominated for this year's award that include Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters, US golfer Cristie Kerr, US tennis star Serena Williams, Chinese weightlifter Li Ping and Korean figure skating sensation Kim Yu-na.

The United States Sports Academy, an accredited sports specific institution with headquarters at Daphne, Alabama founded in 1972, has provided its sports programs to more than 60 countries around the world and is best known for its Awards of Sports series. This year's awards was made in association with USA Today and NBC Sports.
