PhilBoxing.com

With the growing popularity of boxing in the Philippines stirred by the remarkable achievements of pound-for-pound king, Congressman Manny Pacquiao, and a growing discussion on whether Pacquiao should retire following his winning an eighth world title in eight different weight divisions, a timely conference on ?Boxing and the Brain? is scheduled to open on Friday at the Diamond Hotel in Manila.

The high powered gathering will bring together leading members of the American Association of Professional Ringside Physicians in a two-day conference hosted by the UP College of Medicine, Department of Neurosciences.

The conference will tackle the evaluation and management of head and neck Injuries in sports.

The special guest will be former Sen. Robert Jaworski, the ?Living Legend? of Philippine basketball who will deliver a message to the participants in the conference. He will be introduced by Dr. Regina Canlas.

Following an overview of the Convention by Dr. Carissa Dioquino, Dr. Ray Monsell of the US will talk about the ?History of Medicine in Boxing? to be followed by a talk on ?Understanding Brain Structure and Preserving Brain Function? by Dr. Leonard Pascual.

Dr. Dioquino told the Inquirer that the purpose of the two-day conference is to "make the doctors aware of the injuries" to fighters in view of the growing popularity of the sport and the fact that many young men from poor families enter the sport as a means to improve the quality of their lives.

A luncheon symposium moderated by Dr. Dioquino will take up the subjects of saturated fats and coconut oil and revisit an old issue on the potential role of coconut oil in brain health and disease. Dr. Claro Ison will talk about neuroimaging in sports injuries while Dr. Dominic Colletta from the US will tackle non-neurologic emergencies in boxing.

The second day of the conference will open with the topic of ?How to be a good ringside physician? to be handled by Dr. Colletta to be followed by the ?Duties of a ringside physician? by Dr. Joe Estwanik, one of three American specialists participating in the conference.

The subject of returning to sports after head injury will be discussed by Dr. G. Legaspi while Dr. P.F. Reyes will tackle ?Diagnosing and treating neuropsychiatric symptoms in acute and traumatic brain injury in boxing? with Dr. Willy Lopez. Dr. Cristina San Jose will serve as moderator.

Sports injuries in the Philippines will be the subject of Dr. Dominic Jamora?s discourse while boxing regulations in the Philippines are to be discussed by a representative of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines.
