Catubay vies for OPBF fly crown today
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 22 Nov 2005
After compatriot Malcolm Tu?acao's big win, Federico 'Magnifico' Catubay will try to duplicate the feat when he attempts to win the vacant Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation flyweight crown against Japanese Noriyuki Komatsu in a 12-round battle today at the Prefectural Gym in Osaka, Japan.
At yesterday's official weigh-in, Catubay came in at a trim 110 lbs, while Komatsu had to shed off an extra poundage before making the regulatory weight limit of 112 lbs.
;
Catubay's trainer Edmund Villamor, in an interview prior to departing for Osaka, had indicated his ward's great preparation at the ALA Gym of Cebu coming into today's fight.
RP flyweight champ Federico Catubay (left), in winning action against Mayuki Fujigake, goes for the more prestigious OPBF title today against another Japanese Noriyuki Komatsu.
"He's in tremendous shape. He has done everything to prepare for Komatsu. He plans to attack Komatsu's chin all throughout the fight and see if it holds up," said Villamor.
This will be Catubay's second attempt at the same title, having lost in his first try to Australia-based Lebanese Hussein Hussein early this year.
Catubay will be cheered on from the sidelines today by newly-crowned OPBF bantam king Malcolm Tunacao and undefeated OPBF minimumweight kingpin Rodel Mayol with their manager Yasuo Matsuoka and wife Genara.
Komatsu, a one-time WBC flyweight challenger, hopes to regain the title he had relinquished when he battled regular WBC flyweight champ Pongsaklek Wongjongkam last January.
