Tacuyan stuns ex-Asia Pacific champ in Baguio box-off

PhilBoxing.com

Rolando Tacuyan, the youngest member of the Tacuyan boxing family, outlasted former World Boxing Organization interim Asia Pacific Youth superfeatherweight champion Amor Tino Saturday in Baguio City during the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines? series of box-offs for membership in the Philippine team to the coming First MVP (Manuel V. Pangilinan) International Friendship Cup.

Tacuyan, only 19, engaged the much-experienced and older Tino in a final round toe-to-toe exchanges to earn the nod of the judges for a slim, 26-24, decision victory that bolstered his chances of duplicating his father Orlando and brother Orlando Jr.?s feats of making it to the national squad in separate eras.
The elder Orlando is a one-time bronze medalist in the Southeast Asian Games who is married to trackster Nenita Dungca, a SEA Games gold medalist and still after years of retirement holder of the fastest time in the 800-meter run

The MVP Cup, dedicated to the birthday anniversary of ABAP chair and PLDT top honcho Manny V. Pangilinan, is set July 14-19 at the Philippine International Convention Center Forum.
Like the La Trinidad leg of the box-off, last Saturday?s event was held pitting the national team aspirants against their professional counterparts although this time the pros, several of whom are rated challengers in their respective divisions, managed a pair of wins.

Leading the Baguio leg?s victors was light-flyweight Bill Vicera, gold medal winner in the 2009 SEA Games and the 2005 President?s Cup in Indonesia who like Tacuyan, could assure himself of a seat in the two national men?s teams ABAP is forming for the MVP Cup by outclassing Jackson Nimenia of the host city, 25-9.

Veteran international campaigners Jameboy Vicera, brother of Bill Vicera, Gerson Nietes and Jr., Jogen Ladon, likewise, strengthen their grips of a berth each in the RP teams with impressive triumphs over the money fighters.
The younger Vicera, representing Bago City in Negros Occidental and winner of the featherweight division in last year?s RP-Guam dual meet, outmaneuvered Ivan Rodriguez of Baguio, 25-10, while Nietes of Bacolod City beat L:eonel Mark Duran, 25-12 in their flyweight clash.

Ladon, also of Bago City, proved that amateur fighters could not just be pushed around in scoring a 29-17 decision triumph over no. 14 lightweight contender Nathan Bolcio.
Glicerio Catolico III, son of national coach Boy Catolico, caught no. 5 bantamweight challenger Javier Malaulan of Benguet) gasping for breath scoring a lopsided 39-19 verdict.

Light-fly Crisanto Godaren of Baguio defeated Ian Clark Bautista, 20-19, and comebacking Delfin Boholst showed the way to Dennis Va;lvan, 23-14, in their light-welter, all-amateur encounter.

The only two women?s division collisions saw SEAG Games light-fly gold medallist Alice Kate Aparri mangling Maricris Igam of Palawan , 19-9, a win matched by bantamweight Irish Magno, 33-11, over Naome Tacda of Bohol.
Two other members of the national training pool ? flyweight Bonifacio Fernando and featherweight Ricky Dulay were not as lucky though bowing to Fredirex Rodriguez and Jilio Merlin, respectively.
