Pacquiao flies to US after all
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Sat, 12 Nov 2005
Pound-for-pound star Manny Pacquiao last night boarded Philippine Airlines flight PR 102 bound for Los Angeles as he takes part in the promotional caravan to drum up his return showdown with Mexican icon Erik "El Terrible" Morales on January 21 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
There were initial plans for Pacquiao to fly to Cebu today to start his rigid training, as the promotional tour was reportedly being shelved. As it turned out, Pacquiao was advised to take last night's flight.
On Saturday (Sunday in Manila), both Pacquiao and Morales will be in Las Vegas to promote their fight, which is billed as "The Battle" by promoter Bob Arum.
On Tuesday (Wednesday in RP), the two fighters then motor to Los Angeles for yet another round of promotional effort.
Pacquiao is set to return to the country on November 18, and will then fly to Cebu for the start of his regular training.
"This is a fight we're very excited about," said promoter Bob Arum in a release sent to the media. "Both Morales and Pacquiao give it their all, each and every second while in the ring."
Morales had bested Pacquiao in their first encounter, a 12-round classic last March 19.
Meanwhile, Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach, expressed confidence there will be a different outcome in the second fight.
"We're going to be wearing Reyes, a real punchers glove. I think it makes a big difference this time," Roach said, referring to the first encounter where Pacquiao was forced to use a different brand of gloves.
The rematch between Morales and Pacquiao will be promoted by Top Rank, Wynn Las Vegas and will be aired on HBO Pay Per View.
