VILORIA RETURNS TO THE RING ON JULY 10
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 01 Jun 2010
Former world light flyweight champion Brian Viloria who won the WBC title and later the IBF crown has decided to move up to flyweight and will return to the ring on July 10 in the Philippines.
There were initial reports that the fight would be held in Cebu which is a hotbed of boxing in the country but there?s nothing definite as yet regarding the venue.
The Solar Sports promotion will feature Viloria against Mexico?s 30 year old Omar ?Lobito? Soto Perez who has a record of 19-6-2 with 13 knockouts in the 4th Battle of the Bay series.
In his last fight on May 1, 2010 Soto was held to a draw by Juan Kantun (14-1-1, 111 KO?s) with all three judges turning in identical 57-57 scorecards in the six round bout.
Earlier, Soto scored a 2nd round TKO over Cristian Estrada on December 6, 2009. However, he lost to then WBO flyweight champion Omar Andres Narvaez by an 11th round knockout on June 26, 2009 and then suffered an 8th round TKO at the hands of undefeated Cesar Seda (16-0, 13 KO?s) in a battle for the vacant IBO flyweight crown on September 18, 2009.
Viloria who won the IBF title with a spectacular 11th round knockout of Ulises Solis at the Araneta Coliseum on Aprl 19, 2009 had one successful defense against Mexico?s Jesus Iribe at the Blaisdell Center in Honolulu winning a comfortable twelve round unanimous decision before being stunned by Panama?s Carlos Tamara on January 23, 2010 in another Solar Sports promotion at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Viloria was leading comfortably on the scorecards of all three judges but suddenly wilted in the so-called championship rounds and when Tamara had him on the ropes and threw several unanswered punches international referee Bruce McTavish stepped in and called a halt with just 1:15 remaining in the fight.
A badly drained Viloria was rushed to the Makati Medical Center but doctors found nothing to worry about and indications were he was physically exhausted by trying to make the light flyweight limit which prompted Viloria to make a decision to return to the ring and fight at 112 pounds.
