BOBBY READY FOR REMATCH OR RAHEEM
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Mon, 10 Oct 2005
Newly-minted marquee name in boxing, Bobby Pacquiao, has announced he will be ready to take on any comers following his monumental win over Carlos Hernandez at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao, who holds the World Boxing Council Continental Americas super-featherweight title, has told his new manager, Rex "Wakee" Salud, that he will just need a little time to rest and them, "line them all up."
Salud, who now co-manages Bobby with the latter's superstar brother Manny Pacquiao, yesterday told this writer that Bobby's next assignment could either be a rematch with Hernandez in December, or a dukeout with Zahir Raheem, recent conqueror of Erik Morales.
"Grabe ang popularity ni Bobby after the victory. Everybody now knows him. The Pacquiao name is really different," Salud, maker of three world champions in the past, pointed out.
Many at ringside, especially from the press box, had thought Hernandez had done enough to win the fight by a slight margin, as the Filipino looked the worse for wear following the 10-round scrap. Another school of thought, however, had it that Bobby Pacquiao edged out Hernandez fair and square by a slight margin after knocking down the El Salvadoran descent in the second frame.
Naturally, to put an end to this unfinished business, Pacquiao wants no less than a reprise to shut out the non-believers.
If a rematch is not worked out, Pacquiao has reportedly been groomed to be the next opponent for Raheem, the former Olympian who whipped up a storm by outclassing Morales in their lightweight fight last September 10.
Salud and Bobby Pacquiao are arriving in the Philippines on October 12.
