PhilBoxing.com

Katsunari Takayama.

Former two-time world WBA/WBC Minimumweight Champion Katsunari Takayama of Osaka, Japan and fast-rising prospect Bon Jovi Canillas of Toledo City headline another international boxing presentation of ALA Promotions when they take on separate foes on May 22 at Mandaue City Sports Complex.

The 26 years old Japanese has beaten some notable Filipino fighters among them ? Rollen del Castillo of ALA Gym, Elmer Gejon, Mating Kilakil and Fabio Marfa. He has also outpointed highly rated Carlos Melo of Panama who was a victim of Milan Melindo when they last fought in Cebu City.

Takayama, the fleet-footed and stylish ringster won the WBC Minimumweight title when he outpointed Mexican Isaac Bustos in Osaka, Japan in April 4, 2005 but lost it in his first title defense against Eagle Den Junlophan.

After that defeat, Takayama bounced back with an 8 round technical decision victory over Rollen del Castillo of ALA Gym when the fight was stopped due to an accidental head butt. It was one of two more fights before Takayama won the interim WBA world Minimumweight title win a decisive triumph over Carlos Melo.

Now training at ALA Gym, the diminutive Takayama is bent on winning his third world title and is aiming to challenge IBF Nkosinathi Joyi of South Africa, through his collaboration with ALA Promotions.

In the supporting main event, power-punching Bon Jovi Canillas attempts to register his 6th consecutive knockouts when he collides with trial-horse Dexter Mendoza (9(KO?s4) + 4L, 2D).

Fresh from his explosive stoppage of African, Fred Sayuni in his first foreign fight in Dubai last April 23, the iron-fisted Toledo bomber, Canillas has one of the highest knockout percentage among upcoming Filipino fighters in the country today.

He counts among his prominent KO victories, Roger Galicia, Donriel Marcos, Petch Twins Gym of Thailand and Fred Sayuni of Africa.

ALA Promotions President, Michael Aldeguer predicts that ?Bon Jovi is one of the hottest prospect we are looking at. Maybe after 2 or 3 more fights, we will start pitting him against Mexican warriors to test how far we can go with him.?

ALA Promotions is making a comeback at the Mandaue City Sports Complex after a few years of absence in the venue where many Cebuano fighters started their careers.

It is where Rodel Mayol, Malcolm Tu?acao, Z Gorres, Boom Boom Bautista, AJ Banal and a lot more others fought their way to the top of the boxing world.
