By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 May 2010

Japan?s WBC bantamweight champion Hozumi Hasegawa suffered a broken jaw in his 4th round TKO loss to Mexico?s WBO champion Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel at the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo last Friday night.
The report that Hasegawa broke his jaw and would need surgery was made by Shinsei Boxing Gym president Masato Yamashita.
The 29 year old southpaw is scheduled to undergo surgery and is expected to be out of action for an extended period of time.
Montiel caught Hasegawa with a vicious left to the side of the champion?s jaw in the dying seconds of the fourth round and as a groggy Hasegawa?s right hand held on to the ropes Montiel launched a barrage of punches forcing referee Laurence Cole to stop the fight with one second remaining in the round which saw Hasegawa?s corner protest to no avail. .
Hasegawa who was making the eleventh defense of his title was a heavy favorite after winning his last five fights by knockouts in a total of ten rounds.
