MELLIGEN WINS BIG, SHUTS OUT MEXICAN FOE

PhilBoxing.com

Las Vegas, NV.- There were two big fights cards tonight in this glitzy City. But it really did not matter as the more important one, at least from any Pinoy?s point of view was the one that happened at the Hard Rock Casino put together by the good people at Bob Arum?s Top Rank Promotions.

The other fight card was held at the Thomas and Mack Arena and it involved two aging heavyweights way past their prime. (Hollyfield vs. Botha)

Headlining the Hard Rock fight card was ALA boy, Mighty Mark Melligen of Bacolod City. Melligen, who has been campaigning lately in this city under the auspices of the Top Rank, did not disappoint the highly partisan Filipino crowd.

Melligen was put to test by a tough Mexican slugger named Norberto Gonzales. Gonzalez holds a record that is almost a mirror image of that of Melligen. For that reason, in paper, the fight was a match well put together.

However, the fight turned out to be one sided in favor of Melligen. From the get go it was the Filipino who landed the more crisp and telling blows. Gonzales managed to land a few telling blows but they were too far in between.

Gonzalez was put to the canvas by Melligen in round 4 but Joe Cortez, the referee, declared it a slip and thus no KD credit was given to Melligen.

Gonzales staged a late rally towards the later part of the 10 round fight but it was too little too late. Melligen was so far ahead by that time that he merely coasted at the waning moments of the fight and gained a wide unanimous decision from the judges. The scores by the three judges were identical 100-90, all for Melligen.

The other results in the fight card are as follows:

Hiromitsu Miura in his pro debut beat Isaac Atencio (2-3-2, 2KO) by unanimous decision.

Vladimir Tereskin (13-0-1, 7KO) won over Joseph Rabotte ( 7-12-0-,3KO) by UD

Diego Magdaleno kept his record clean (15-0-0,3K0) via a UD over Manny Perez (14-6-1, 2K0) .

Marcos Herrera (5-2-1, 1K0) and Cotez Bey (8-2-0-,4KO fought a 4 round draw.

Jose Benavides (4-0-0.4K0), the 17year new discovery of Freddie Roach kept his knockout streak by scoring s 2nd round KO over Scott Paul (5-5-0.1KO)
