Eden Sonsona wins title, Danilo Pena retains title By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Sun, 13 Dec 2009 Eden Sonsona knocked out Monico Laurente at 45 seconds in the first round to win the vacant Philippine bantamweight title at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City last night, 12 December 2009. The KO win is an emphatic follow up to Sonsona’s likewise abbreviated triumph in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto super fight last 15 November 2009. A right jab left straight to the face combination sent Laurente on his back for the full count. Laurente tried with all his might to get up but his body just wouldn’t respond soon enough to beat the count. In the bloody co-feature bout, Danilo Pena retained his Philippine super-flyweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over courageous but outpunched Marvin Tampus. Tampus was cut over his right eye in the 5th round which referee Ferdinand Estrella ruled as coming from a punch. This cut bothered Tampus from then on and his right eye was completely closed by the 12th round. While Tampus showed he could take Pena’s best shots, Pena simply delivered and landed more blows to Tampus who allowed Pena to outbox him prompting Cebuanos in the crowd to shout “balos bay, balos bay” (hit back comrade, hit back comrade). Promising Allan Tanada was denied a win in his 124-lb fight with Japanese Tadamasa Takashima when their scheduled 8-round fight was stopped in the 2nd round due to a big cut above Takashima’s right eye which resulted from an accidental clash of heads. Tanada knocked down Takashima in the first round after clearly showing he was the better man in terms of skills and power. In accordance with the rule where the fight has not gone past the 4th round, the decision was a technical draw. This rule likewise denied Draian Francisco a clear win over Nino Suello in their fight not too long ago when, after giving Suello a bad beating throughout, the fight ended in a technical draw in the 3rd round because of a big bloody cut on the eyebrow from a clash of heads. Dan Nazareno, Jr. outclassed South Korean Jung-Hoon Yang in every round which prompted referee Virgilio Garcia to stop their 10-round 147-lb fight midway in the 6th round. Nazareno was landing at will and the stoppage was to save the Korean fighter from unnecessary injury and so he could fight again some other day. Other results: Ronald Pontillas and Joan de Guia fought to a split draw – 10 rounds, 131 lbs Richard Pumicpic by UD over Rey Sumapig - 8 rounds, 118 lbs Gadwin Tubigon and Randy Migrino fought to a majority draw - 8 rounds, 124 lbs Dennis Tubieron by UD over Ronnie Pelonia – 6 rounds, 117 lbs Joan Imperial by UD over Rodelito Baronia – 4 rounds, 109 lbs Click here to view a list of other articles written by Epifanio M.
