DARCHINYAN EYES DONAIRE REMATCH AFTER ROJAS

PhilBoxing.com

WBC/WBA super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan of Australia has set his sights on a rematch with current WBA interim champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire should the Australian overcome the challenge of lanky Mexican Tomas Rojas at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage in California on Sunday, Manila Time.

Darchinyan’s promoter Gary Shaw told us recently that Darchinyan was ready to fight Donaire if the Filipino doesn’t run. Donaire responded by saying he would take on Darchinyan whom he knocked out with one punch in the 5th round to win the IBF/IBO flyweight belts on July7, 2007 and claimed the accolade of “Knockout of the Year”, anytime and anywhere.

Darchinyan’s immediate task is to get rid of Rojas who he claims “acts brave, but when he sees me here he begins to shake."

Rojas didn’t lose his composure over Darchinyan’s taunting in their pre-fight press conference saying merely that "Darchinyan is strong, but not indestructible," adding that he is “going to throw a lot of punches."

Darchinyan moved up to bantamweight to take on Ghana's Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko last July but his boasts that he would knock out the African and then aim for huge money fights in heavier divisions was shattered by Agbeko who beat him soundly.
Darchinyan has returned to super flyweight and the Mexican Rojas appears like the perfect opponent for Darchinyan to redeem his reputation.

Darchinyan has demolished several Mexicans in recent years including Jorge Arce, Cristian Mijares and Victor Burgos sending all three to hospital after the fights. The wins earned Darchinyan the tag of "Mexican Killer".

Rojas, 29, has lost 11 of his 44 professional fights and one of the losses was a sixth round technical knockout to Arce. He also dropped a ten round unanimous decision to former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa in a fight at the famed Araneta Coliseum in Metro Manila on the undercard of a Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios WBC International super featherweight title showdown on July 2, 2006.

Rojas earned the crack at Darchinyan by handily beating South African Evans Mbamba for the WBC interim title in October. Darchinyan has a record of 32 -2-1 with 26 knockouts.
